He was born on 30 July, 1898, in Castleford, Yorkshire. He was the seventh child in a family of eight children. His father worked in a coal mine in Castleford but didnt want his children to follow in his footsteps, so the children were educated at a local school as much as possible. It was in his teenage years that he developed an interest and talent in art. This helped him to get a scholarship (獎學金)to Castleford Secondary School. Aged 18, he was called up to the army. In 1917, he was injured during a gas attack at the Battle of Cambrai. After his injury, he spent the rest of the war behind the line training new soldiers. After the war, he continued his education. In 1921, he won a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art.Henry Moore was a talented student. He usually experimented with new styles and this often displeased his teachers who were trying to teach the classic style. In 1924, he spent time travelling in Italy and later Paris. There he could view the great Masters such as Michelangelo and Giovanni Pisano. But Moore was also influenced by his studies of primitive art (原始藝術),and at the Louvre he was particularly influenced by the Chac Mool.On his return to London, he took up a teaching post at the Royal College of Art. This part-time post enabled him to work on his own art. In the 1930s, Moore became an active member of the informal modem art movement, centered around the ideas of people like Pablo Picasso and Jean Arp.The Second World War led to more traditional styles and Moore worked as a war artist. This helped Moore become famous and after the war he received many awards and opportunities in America. In 1948, he was awarded the International Sculpture Prize at the Venice Biennale. Elephants in Uganda have increased by 600 percent, to more than 5,000 individuals, from a low of 700 to 800 in the 1980s, reports a survey in May by the Wildlife Conservation Society, the Great Elephant Census, and the Uganda Wildlife Authority. So what is Uganda doing differently? In the recent past, there was a lot of poaching (偷獵),and the wildlife really suffered. The government takes wildlife crime very seriously because wildlife is an important part of tourism industry, which is now the biggest earner of foreign income. One of the challenges is that the protection of elephants needs more equipment, such as cameras, vehicles and helicopters. The Japanese government recently provided 65 cameras, which are being used to survey national parks in Uganda. However, many of the animals migrate (遷徙) across international borders, which can make conservation efforts harder. So the Ugandan government is working with its neighbors by sharing information on traffickers (非法買賣者)and walking around across borders. In 2019, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) listed Uganda as one of the eight countries of primary concern because of the amount of illegal ivory smuggled (走私)through the country. The government would put stricter penalties on those caught trading wildlife products. One plan is to impose a fine (處以罰款)equal to an animals value, around $21,000 for an elephant, and jail time up to 20 years. The government has also started a new wildlife crime unit. More effort is being put into security at airports.Have other animals been at risk? Gorillas (大猩猩)havent been targeted much by trafficking, but the international market for body parts has driven poaching of rhinos, big cats and elephants. There is also a bush-meat problem in which wild animals are hunted for their meat. The government will deal with the problem in the same way.9.What does the underlined word “penalties” mean n Paragraph 4?A.Limitations.B. Punishments.C.Lessons.D. Standards.10.What can we infer from the passage?A.Wildlife is an important part of tourism industry.B.The number of wildlife is increasing across Africa.C.America has provided more support for wildlife protection.D.Gorillas are not as risky as rhinos and big cats now.11.Which is the best title of the passage?A.Why is the number of the elephants in Uganda rising?B.What are Africans doing to prevent wildlife from dying out?C.How do hunters illegally kill wildlife and smuggle their body parts?D.What has the Wildlife Conservation Society done to protect wildlife?DThis week teen researchers were pulling down awards for very cool science. Together, three teens received $175,000.Austin Wang, 18, comes from Vancouver, Canada. He won the $75,000 Gordon E. Moore award. This top prize is named for Intels cofounder. Austin attends David Thompson Secondary School. For his project, Austin studied the microbes (微生物)that can turn wastes into electricity.Austin found more than 100 genes within bacteria (細菌)that can help turn wastes into electricity. Many of these genes were never before recognized, the teen says. He found out which was best at helping the microbes make energy. By using the bacteria that host these genes, he increased power production in his fuel cells by surprising 20 times. Austin also developed a way to make the fuel cells get to work faster. Usually, it takes a few months before a new fuel cell makes electricity. But Austins fuel cells begin making electricity in just a few hours or days.Kathy Lius research is also about power production. The 17-year-old attends West High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her project won one of Intel ISEFs two $50,000 awards.Batteries contain a liquid (液體)that may get out of batteries and harm other things. Kathy came up with a way to replace it with something else, which wont get out of batteries. Designers wont need to put such thick walls on these batteries. And the thing she uses to replace that liquid is very cheap to make. Another benefit: the new material holds more energy than regular material. In Kathys research, she made small coin-sized batteries like those found in watches.Syamantak Payra also picked up a $50,000 award for his research. The 15-year-old attends Clear Brook High School in Friendswood, Texas. The device he developed could help people who cant walk well because of a disease or injury. Syamantaks way is both inexpensive and easy to use.12.Austin Wang won the award mainly because he _.A.turned wastes into electricityB.invented some new fuel cellsC.changed genes of some microbesD.found some new kinds of microbes13.Compared with traditional batteries, Kathys batteries_.A.are much lighter in weightB.are more costly to produceC.contain a special kind of expensive liquidD.are more dangerous to the environment14.Who would most probably be interested in Syamantaks invention?A.People suffering a disease or an injury.B.People wanting small coin-sized batteries:C.People having difficulty in using their legs.D.People wanting an inexpensive wheelchair.15.What would the following paragraph most probably be about?A.Another teens invention.B.The history of the awards.C.How the teens will use the money.D.More about Syamantaks invention.第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分) 根據短文內容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項,選項中有兩項為多余選項。The tallest men in the world are the Dutch, while the tallest women come from Latvia. 16 It also found that East Timor is home to some of the shortest men on our planet, while the shortest women are in Guatemala.Scientists from Imperial College London studied height measurements (測量)for young adults over the past century. The scientists found that between 1914 and 2019, people in some countries have grown taller. 17 The study found that Dutch men now have an average height of more than 182 centimeters. The average height of Latvian women is 170 centimeters. These numbers show an increase for both countries since 1914.18 Philip Wilkens is from Amsterdam, the largest city in the Netherlands. He thinks diet and exercise might explain, in part, why Dutch men are so tall. “Maybe we eat more potatoes? Maybe we eat more bread than other people? We are sportsmen, so we do a lot of sports. Maybe thats why we grow a little faster,” he said.He might have a point. 19 Silvija Umbrasko is from Riga Stradins University in Latvia. She says that the height of women can be increased by playing sports and doing exercise. She adds that sports, such as basketball, volleyball and even handball, help a young person grow.20 For example, some scientists explored the possible relation between a lack of emotional attention and physical growth. But scientists also add that growth depends mostly on diet as well as environmental and genetic (基因的)factors.A.The question to ask is, why?B.That finding comes from a new British study.C.What do people think leads to the differences?D.Other studies have explored other possible reasons.E.Teenagers should do more sports to help themselves grow.F.However, the average height has dropped in other areas.G.Scientists agree sport has something to do with how tall a person is. At the age of 12, Kobe Bryant was about to give up basketball forever.
