Originally, the Ivy League was an athletic conference made up of 8 private institutes of higher learning in northeastern United States. However, as time went on, these schools also became known for their excellence in academics besides athletics. Until now, these 8 schools have been recognized as some of the best colleges and universities in the United States. Harvard University is a private institution located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The university includes a number of graduate and professional schools, as well as a college for undergraduates. In 2012, Harvard ranked number one in US News ranking of national universities again. Founded in 1636, Harvard is the oldest institute of higher education in the United States. It can be said that first there was Harvard, then the United States of America. Also, Harvards library contains the oldest collection of books in the United States as well as the largest private collection in the world. Harvard has also been described by Forbes Magazine as one of the “billionaire universities” as of their recent list of 469 billionaires, 50 received a degree from Harvard.Harvard College (the institute for undergraduate students) is one of the most famous schools in the United States. It offers over 40 undergraduate fields of study, including astrophysics, mathematics, neurobiology(神經(jīng)生物學(xué)), etc. And the financial aid program there is amazing. Even though the tuition is about 37,576, and there are other expenses throughout the year, about 70% of undergraduate students received financial aid. Out of those students, over 90% of them had their full need met. And the policies for international students are the same for U.S. citizens.Harvard College is very selective, as it only admits about 6% of their applicants. For admission into Harvard College, it is required that students take the SAT or the ACT, as well as 2 SAT Subject Tests. Harvard will also look at other factors during admission such as your application essay, high school transcript, recommendations, and most importantly, your character and personal qualities.56. What are the Ivy League schools famous for? A. Athletics and location. B. Academics and history. C. Financial aid and training. D. Athletics and academics. 57. Why is Harvard called one of the “billionaire universities”? A. Because people can get a lot of money from Harvard. B. Because there are 50 billionaires in Harvard. C. Because nearly one ninth of the billionaires once studied in Harvard. D. Because 469 billionaires sponsor Harvard.B (722 words)Everybody cheats. Whether its the taxi driver who tricks a visitor and takes them the long way round, or the shop assistant who doesnt give the correct change, or the police officer who accepts a bribe (賄賂) everybodys at it. Cheats in the nest include the scientist whose research was based on fake data, the game show competitors who worked with a friend in the audience or win a million pounds, and the doctor who made up his qualifications and wasnt really a doctor at all. Everybody cheats; nobodys playing the game. Is cheating acceptable, a natural way of surviving and being successful? Or is it something that should be frowned on, and young people discouraged from doing? If its the latter how can we explain to children why so many bend the rules?Take sport for example. The World Cup was filled with cheating. Whether diving, pretending to be hurt or denying a handball, footballers will do anything for a free kick or a penalty shot. France striker Henry denied cheating to win the free kick which led to his sides second goal in their 3 1 victory over Spain. Many footballers, however, are often putting it on. Whatever the nationality theres one common ploy: the player rolls over holding their leg, ankle or head seeming to be in great pain. As a result a yellow card and / or free kick is given for the foul and then, a few seconds later, the player is up and about as if nothing had happened! The ref (裁判) may be taken in by it but youngsters watching the game arent. They also see their heroes getting away with it.Of course its not just football. In 1998 the Tour de France, the worlds greatest cycling event, was hit by a drug taking scandal (丑聞). The 40 bottles of forbidden drugs found with the Fustian team caused a massive investigation that almost caused the Tour to be abandoned. One rider, Veronique, was banned for 9 months. He claimed: “You have cheats in sport, just as you do in business there will always be people trying to take a short cut. At least were not turning a blind eye to the problem, which other sports are.”Is it all unavoidable? Theres huge pressure on all athletes to perform for their fans and for their sponsors. Its success, money and power that rule professional sport rather than an honest attempt to do the best one can.Meanwhile companies around the world are losing billions of dollars to fake products. From cut price CDs and DVDs to sportswear, cheap fake products are everywhere. It has become socially acceptable to buy fake Gucci bags and illegal copies of films. If parents are doing this, their children will follow. So perhaps its not surprising that around the world more pupils than ever are caught cheating during exams. In one case missing exam papers were put up for sale on the Internet. In another, widespread cheating took place by pupils using their mobile phones to receive tested answers. They blame the pressure put on them to do well in exams. It doesnt help that their role models are also cheats. Surely we cant complain when were setting such a bad example. 58. The phrase “be frowned on” (Paragraph 2) most probably means .A. to be disapproved ofB. to be pushed forwardC. to be taken the place ofD. to be stuck with59. The writers purpose for writing this passage is to .A. explain why people in almost every field cheatB. complain about cheats in school educationC. persuade young people not to cheat in examsD. blame the society for tolerating cheats60. The writer mentions the example of the World Cup in Paragraph 2 in order to .A. show cheating is a common phenomenon nowadaysB. discuss the relationship between sport and cheatingC. explore the nature of cheating in important eventsD. warn coaches and athletes of the danger of cheating61. Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?A. Exams are not a good way of testing children.B. Children are natural cheats.C. If adults cheat, children will cheat too.D. Everyone including children cheats.C (741 words)Six people have kept themselves inside a white dome in Hawaii to have an eight-month test of how their mental health might experience during a mission to Mars. The NASA-funded project involves three men and three women who have no access to fresh food and limited access to Internet that requires 20-minute intervals between click and response, as it might be in deep space. They are allowed to step outside their igloo-like enclosure which measures 11 meters in diameter and six meters tall only if wearing a space suit.“We are surrounded by basaltic lava(玄武巖火山石) and living on the slopes of Mauna Loa where there is little evidence of plant or animal life,” wrote crew member Jocelyn Dunn, a doctor at Purdue Universitys School of Industrial Engineering, after her first day in the dome on October 17. “The training wheels are coming off as our new reality is setting in,” Dunn wrote on her blog, , which she plans to update throughout the mission.NASA is spending $1.2 million on a series of three such projects known as Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS) to determine the potential risks of sending people together to spend long periods on a distant planet.NASA is aiming for a human mission to Mars by the 2030s, but experts are still not sure if humans can with-stand the radiation that the journey would involve. It could take eight months to reach the Red Planet, not to mention time spent on it with a thin atmosph
