Find the answers of these words1. congratulation n.-v. 2. celebration n.-v. 3. allow syn. 4. forbid syn. 5. culture n.-adj. 6. sure adj.-v.2). Focus on the usage of “congratulate”, “celebrate” and “ensure” by giving examples, students draw conclusions and practice using them.Step 4 Sentence analyzing and imitating 1.Roosters are supposed to drive away bad spirits from the wedding ceremony, and hens are thought to ensure good luck for the marriage. Eg. 在除夕晚上,長輩理應(yīng)該給孩子發(fā)壓歲錢。 On Spring Festival Eve, the elders are supposed/thought to give gift money to their children.Eg. 在春節(jié), 父母給的壓歲錢被認(rèn)為能確保全年的好運(yùn),而貼春聯(lián)(stick Spring Festival couplets)則被認(rèn)為是辟邪的。 In the Spring Festival, the gift money the parents give to their children is supposed/thought to ensure their children good luck, while sticking Spring Festival couplets is thought/supposed to drive away the bad spirits.2. Another difference is that while we serve food, soft drinks, tea or coffee, alcohol is not permitted at the wedding reception -in fact, alcohol is altogether prohibited in Brunei. Eg. 另一個(gè)習(xí)俗是盡管睡得早有益身體健康,但在大年三十晚上中國人都會(huì)一邊守歲,一邊看CCTV播放的春晚節(jié)目。Another custom is that while going to bed early is good for our health, on Spring Festival Eve, we Chinese will stay up to see the New Year in, watching the performances of the Spring Festival Evening broadcast on CCTV. Show Ss some pictures that show cultural differences to Chinese students and ask “What do you think of their way of meeting each other?”2). From which languages did English borrow words?Task 2 Read Part A again and find : What kinds of words are borrowed from the languages? Task 3 Read Part B and find : What words are mentioned of each kind? Conclusion:We can understand from which language the English words are borrowed according to the _kinds_.Step III PracticeTask 1 Competition Guess which language the words come from.Task 2 Finish Part C on P39 English has borrowed lots of words from other languages. Four of the languages that English has borrowed words from are French, (1) _German_, Italian, and Arabic. Words taken from the French language include words for (2) _food_ and eating such as (3)_restaurant_, words for (4)_jobs_ such as dentist and words for entertainment such as ballet. At weddings in the West, they have confetti which people throw over the bride and groom. This is an(5) _Italian_ word. Italy was famous for the development of (6) _music_ and opera in the 18th century, so many words about music and opera are borrowed from Italian. Additionally, words for military jobs, for example, colonel, also come from Italian.The Germans were very clever at inventing things. They invented the (7) _clock_ to make sure they were one time! When we say man travelled to the Moon in a (8)_rocket_, we were using a German word. Many of the words for fast food or snacks also come from German including the famous (9) _hamburger_. Finally, the Arabs were great traders and so they introduced the English to many new words like coffee and alcohol. Also, a lot of mathematical words such as (10) _zero are from Arabic.Step IV ThinkingWhy did English borrow different kinds of words from different languages?1. Reasons for words borrowed from French: The French ruled England for years. The French love food.2. Reasons for words borrowed from German:The Germans were very clever at inventing things.3. Reasons for words borrowed from Italy: Italy was famous for music and opera.4. Reasons for words borrowed from Arabic: The Arabs were great traders.Conclusion:The borrowed words from other languages are connected with the _culture or history_ of the countries.Step V English idioms I think its a piece of cake.
