A tiny crack in the floor would sound a hundred times louder than in the daylight, and my imagination would take over, creating burglar
5、s and monsters. Darkness always made me feel so helpless, too. My heart would pound, and I would lie very still so that the “enemy” wouldn't discover me._ Perhaps one of the worst fears I had as a child was that of not being liked by others. First of all, I was quite shy. Second, I worried const
6、antly about my looks, thinking people wouldn't like me because I was too fat or wore braces. I tried to wear the “right” clothes and even had intense arguments with my mother over the importance of wearing the “flats” instead of saddle shoes to school. Being popular was so important to me then,
7、and the fear of not being liked was a powerful one. One of the processes of evolving from a child to an adult is being able to recognize and outgrow our fears. I've learned that darkness does not have to take on a life of its own, that others can help me when I'm lost, and that friendliness
8、and sincerity will encourage people to like me. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us to cope with our lives as adults.Write an outline (20 points)Read the following passage carefully and compose a “sentence outline” for it.The Changing Workweek In the early 1900s in the U.S.A
9、., workers in large industries worked long days and long weeks. It was not uncommon for workers in the meat-packing companies of Chicago, for example, to work twelve to fourteen hours, for six or seven days a week. As unions started exerting their influence, however, the working conditions of Americ
10、an workers began improving, and the workweek was gradually shortened. Today, workers have workweek options that were unheard of earlier in the last century. The five-day workweek has become commonplace in American industries. However, the four-day workweek is becoming even more popular. Many workers
11、 prefer four ten-hour days. This gives them longer working days, but it also gives them three-day weekends, an unheard-of luxury even twenty years ago. Management isn't complaining since the same amount of work gets accomplished, and in some cases a plant can be totally shut down on the fifth da
12、y, saving the company thousands of dollars in utilities. Another change in the workweek is the variable hours option. While American workers have traditionally worked either day or night shifts, some companies are allowing workers to set their own hours within the workweek. Flexible schedules are be
13、coming more common in metropolitan areas with commuter-time traffic problems and in industries that are open around the clock. The advantage to the workers is that they can plan their hours around the days of their families. For example, a husband who takes each afternoon off could babysit the child
14、ren while his wife works. The variable hours schedule also motivates workers because the company is letting them control their own time. A third change in the workweek over the past twenty years is the use of overtime. While most workers do not have to work beyond a forty-hour week, many companies w
15、ill pay them time and a half to do so. Although this is more expensive for the company, it is still cheaper than having to hire additional workers and providing benefits. On traditional nonworking days such as holidays, workers are often paid double-time or more to work. Overtime pay allows companie
16、s to meet their production needs without exploiting the workers. It allows workers to make extra money at a higher rate than they normally work for. Although overtime work often represents a return to longer working days and weeks, it is done on a voluntary basis and is usually negotiated willingly
17、by the workers. What does the future hold for American workers? As modern technology turns more and more work to machines, the typical workweek may continue to shrink. Some companies have already gone to the thirty-five-hour week, and in the 21st century, the thirty-five-hour week may be standard. W
18、ithin twenty years, the most common workweek may be a four-day, thirty-two-hour workweek. The great advantage to shorter workweeks is that workers have more time off to themselves. However, given the financial demands upon American families in the future, it may also become common for workers to hol
19、d down two full-time jobs at one time. Given the American work ethic, most workers will probably fill their free time with more work instead of more leisure.Compose an essay(60 points) Many technological innovations have been “double-edged swords” with positive and negative effects on society at lar

The room was small with one tiny bathroom for four people. The place was noisy, but it was the best I could afford for the time. Ho
25、wever, one day when I returned from school, I saw smoke coming from the back of the house. The cottage had caught fire, and the fire department was putting out the last flames. My room was a charred mess; there was no way that anyone could live there for a long time. I was once more out of a place t
26、o stay, and there was still over a month of school left.After looking around all weekend for lodging, I finally gave up and moved home. I had to drive forty miles to school every day, so I almost spent as much on gas as I would have on lodging . Id drive to school, go to classes, and come home and s

In many cultures, white symbolizes purity, and black, on the other hand, symbolizes death.Some experts believe that colors have a s
33、trong effect on us and that colors can be used to heal. They say that by concentrating our thoughts on certain colors, we can cause energy to go to the parts of the body that need treatment. White light is said to be cleansing, and it can balance the bodys entire system. Yellow stimulates the mind a
34、nd creates a positive attitude, so it can help against depression. Green, which has a calming and restful effect, is supposed to be good for heart conditions.Some psychologists also use color to treat patients with emotional and psychological problems. By giving them what is called the Luscher color
35、 test, in which people select the colors they like and dislike, doctors can learn many things about a patients personality.In conclusion, the study of color can help us understand ourselves and improve our lives. It offers an alternative way to heal the body and spirit, and it can help us understand

They basically just come to “hang out”._ Apart from teenagers and lovers, nuclear family members can also be identified as the largest group of mallgoers. Mom, Dad and little Jenny of Fred, visit the mall
43、on Friday and Saturday evenings. Mom walks around looking at various things until she discovers that Jenny is seeing some of the special mall exhibits geared toward little children, or in the case of Fred, he is heading for the place that young boys find appealing. Indeed, the mall provides somethin
44、g special for every member of the nuclear family. In a word, the teenagers, lovers on dates, and the nuclear family make up the majority of mallgoers. There are also gray-hairs, whose attention may suddenly be caught by some modern gadgets. These people may end up spending little money, but they nee
45、d not purchase anything to find pleasure at the mall. While his description was off the mark, the real news was almost as fantastic: researchers at George Washington University split single human embryos into identical copies, a technology that has sparked a storm of controversy around the world. Claiming they began t
47、he experiments to spur a debate, the researchers got more than they bargained for. The Vatican condemned the technology as evil; one German magazine called the research “immoral”, and sociologists in the U.S. disagreed hotly over whether the technology should be offered to infertile couples, couples
48、 incapable of having children. The news left people wondering what the technology is all about. Actually what the researchers did was to extend a technique that has been used in livestock for more than a decade. The physicians used tube fertilization technology to create 17 human embryos in a labora
49、tory. When the embryos had grown enough to contain 2-8 cells, the researchers separated them into 48 cells. Two of the separated cells survived for a few days in the lab, developing into new human embryos smaller than the head of a pin. Though no great technical feat, the procedure opens a range of
50、unsettling possibilities. For example, parents could have one embryo implanted in the mothers womb and store its identical siblings indefinitely. The spare embryos could be implanted later, allowing parents to create a family of identical children of different ages. Spare embryos could also be sold
51、to other families, who could see from an already born child how their embryo would turn out. Even more bizarre, a woman conceived from a split embryo could give birth to her own twin. Such scenarios raise painful issues about the rights of parents and meaning of individuality. Some sociologists main
52、tain that parents have the right to do with embryos what they will, including having twins born years apart. But others fear that the procedure unacceptably alters what it means to be human being, especially when the younger twins are forced to see older versions of themselves. Amid the controversy,
53、 one thing seems certain: the experiments will continue. While cloning is forbidden in Germany, fertility research is proceeding in the U.S. without federal regulations. But researchers must obtain approval from their hospital board. Without federal oversight, the highly competitive fertility busine
