The way nottofallasleepat theswitchistotakenaps whenyou need them. “We have to totally change our attitude toward napping,” says Dr. WilliamDement of Stanford University, the godfather of sleep rese

22、arch.Last year a nationalcommission led by Dement identified an“American sleep debt,” which one member said wasas importantas the nationaldebt. The commissionwas concerned aboutthe dangersofsleepiness:people causing industrial accidents or fallingasleep while driving.This may be why we havea new sle

23、eppolicyin theWhiteHouse. Accordingtorecent reports,PresidentClintonis tryingto take a half-hour snooze every afternoon.About 60% of American adults nap when giventhe opportunity.Weseem tohave “a mid- afternoonquiescentphase, ” alsocalled“a secondaryslee p gate. ” Sleeping 15 minutes to two hours in

24、 the early afternoon can reduce stress andimprove alertness. Clearly, we were born to nap.We Superstars of Snooze dont nap toreplace lostshut- eye or to preparefora nightshift.Rather,we “snack” on slee p,whenever,wherever and at whatever time we feellike it. Call it somnia. I myself have nappedin bu

39、ly need about the same amount ofsleepas they needed inearlyadulthood.About halfof allpeople over 65 have frequentsleepingproblems, such as insomnia, and deep sleep stages in many elderly people often become veryshort or stop completely. This change may be a normal part of aging, or it may result fro

40、mmedical problems that are common in elderly people and from the medications and othertreatments for those problems.Experts say that if you feel drowsy during the day, evenduring boring activities, you havent hadenough sleep. If you routinely fall asleep within5 minutes of lying down, you probably h

41、ave severe sleep deprivation, possibly even a sleepdisorder. Microsleeps, or very brief episodes of sleep in an otherwise awake person, areanother mark of sleep deprivation. In many cases, people are not aware that they areexperiencing microsleeps. The widespread practice of“burning the candle at bo

42、th ends” inwestern industrialized societies has created so much sleep deprivation that what is reallyabnormal sleepiness is now almost the norm.Many studies make it clear that sleepdeprivation is dangerous. Sleep-deprived people who are tested by using a driving simulatoror by performing a hand-eye

43、coordination task perform as badly as or worse than those whoare i ntoxicated.Sleepdeprivation alsomagnifiesalcohols effectson the body, so a fatiguedpersonwho drinkswillbecome much more impairedthan someone who iswell rested.
