Whenit comes to adaptation, it is important to understand that climate change is a process. We are therefore not talking a
3、bout adapting to a new standard, but to a constantly shifting set of conditions. This is why, in part at least, the US National Climate Assessment says that: “ There is no one -size fits all _ adaptation. ” Nevertheless, there are some actions that offer much and carry little risk or cost. Around th
4、e world, people are adapting in surprising ways, especially in somepoor countries. Floods have become more damagi ng in Ban gladesh in rece nt decades. Mohammed Rezwa n saw opport unity where others saw only disaster. His no t-for-profit orga ni zati on runs 100 river boats that serve as floating li
5、braries, schools, and health clinics, and are equipped with solar pan els and other com muni cat ing facilities. Rezwa n is creati ng float ing conn ectivity( 連 接)to replace flooded roads and highways. But he is also worki ng at a far more fun dame ntal level: his staff show people how to make float
6、 ing garde ns and fish ponds to preve nt starvati on duri ng the wet seas on. Elsewhere in Asia even more ast onishing actions are being take n. Chewa ng Norphel lives in a mountainous region in In dia, where he is known as the Ice Man. The loss of glaciers( 冰 丿丨丨)there due to global warm ing repres
7、e nts an eno rmous threat to agriculture. Without the glaciers, water will arrive in the rivers at times when it can damage crops. Norphel s 2 in spiratio n came from see ing the waste of water over win ter, whe n it was n ot n eeded. He directed the wasted water into shallow basins where it froze,
8、and was stored until the spring. His fields of ice supply perfectly timed irrigation( 灌溉)water. Having created nine such ice reserves, Norphel calculates that he has stored about 200,000m of water. Climate change is a continuing process, so Norphel s ic e reserves will not last forever. Warming will
9、 overtake them. But he is providing a few years during which the farmers will, perhaps, be able to find other means of adapti ng. Increasing Earth s reflectiveness can cool the planet. In southern Spain the sudd en in crease of gree nhouses(which reflect light back to space) has cha nged the warmi n
10、g trend locally, and actually cooled the regi on. While Spain as a whole is heat ing up quickly, temperatures near the greenhouses have decreased. This example should act as an inspiration for all cities. By pain ti ng buildi ngs white, cities may slow dow n the warm ing process. In Peru, local farm
11、ers around a mountain with a glacier that has already falle n victim to climate change have begun painting the entire mountain peak white in the hope that the added reflectiveness will restore the life-giving ice. The outcome is still far from clear. But the World Bank has in cluded the project on i
12、ts list of “100 ideas to save the pla net ”. More ordinary forms of adaptati on are happe ning everywhere. A friend of mine owns an area of land in western Victoria. Over five generations the land has been too wet for cropping. But duri ng the past decade decli ning rain fall has allowed him to pla
13、nt highly profitable crops. Farmers in many coun tries are also adapt ing like this either by grow ing new produce, or by grow ing the same things differe ntly. This is com mon sen se. But some suggesti ons for adapti ng are not. When the pollut ing in dustries argue that we ve lost the battle to co
14、n trol carb on pollutio n and have no choice but to adapt, it s a nonsense desig ned to make the case for bus in ess as usual. Humanbeings will continue to adapt to the changing climate in both ordinary and astonishing ways. But the most sen sible form of adaptatio n is surely to adapt our en ergy s
