1、PRESIDENTOBAMA:儂好。Goodafternoon.ItisagreathonorformetobehereinShanghai,andtohavethisopportunitytospeakwithallofyou.I'dliketothankFudanUniversity'sPresidentYangforhishospitalityandhisgraciouswelcome.I'dalsoliketothankouroutstandingAmbassador,JonHuntsman,whoexemplifiesthedeeptiesandrespect

2、betweenournations.Idon'tknowwhathesaid,butIhopeitwasgood.(Laughter.)WhatI'dliketodoistomakesomeopeningcomments,andthenwhatI'mreallylookingforwardtodoingistakingquestions,notonlyfromstudentswhoareintheaudience,butalsowe'vereceivedquestionsonline,whichwillbeaskedbysomeofthestudentswhoa

3、rehereintheaudience,aswellasbyAmbassadorHuntsman.AndIamverysorrythatmyChineseisnotasgoodasyourEnglish,butIamlookingforwardtothischancetohaveadialogue.ThisismyfirsttimetravelingtoChina,andI'mexcitedtoseethismajesticcountry.Here,inShanghai,weseethegrowththathascaughttheattentionoftheworld-thesoari

4、ngskyscrapers,thebustlingstreetsandentrepreneurialactivity.AndjustasI'mimpressedbythesesignsofChina'sjourneytothe21stcentury,I'meagertoseethoseancientplacesthatspeaktousfromChina'sdistantpast.TomorrowandthenextdayIhopetohaveachancewhenI'minBeijingtoseethemajestyoftheForbiddenCity

5、andthewonderoftheGreatWall.Truly,thisisanationthatencompassesbotharichhistoryandabeliefinthepromiseofthefuture.Thesamecanbesaidoftherelationshipbetweenourtwocountries.Shanghai,ofcourse,isacitythathasgreatmeaninginthehistoryoftherelationshipbetweentheUnitedStatesandChina.Itwashere,37yearsago,thattheS

6、hanghaiCommuniqueopenedthedoortoanewchapterofengagementbetweenourgovernmentsandamongourpeople.However,America'stiestothiscity-andtothiscountry-stretchbackfurther,totheearliestdaysofAmerica'sindependence.In1784,ourfoundingfather,GeorgeWashington,commissionedtheEmpressofChina,ashipthatsetsailf

7、ortheseshoressothatitcouldpursuetradewiththeQingDynasty.Washingtonwantedtoseetheshipcarrytheflagaroundtheglobe,andtoforgenewtieswithnationslikeChina.ThisisacommonAmericanimpulse-thedesiretoreachfornewhorizons,andtoforgenewpartnershipsthataremutuallybeneficial.Overthetwocenturiesthathavefollowed,thec

8、urrentsofhistoryhavesteeredtherelationshipbetweenourcountriesinmanydirections.Andeveninthemidstoftumultuouswinds,ourpeoplehadopportunitiestoforgedeepandevendramaticties.Forinstance,AmericanswillneverforgetthehospitalityshowntoourpilotswhowereshotdownoveryoursoilduringWorldWarII,andcaredforbyChinesec

9、ivilianswhoriskedallthattheyhadbydoingso.AndChineseveteransofthatwarstillwarmlygreetthoseAmericanveteranswhoreturntothesiteswheretheyfoughttohelpliberateChinafromoccupation.Adifferentkindofconnectionwasmadenearly40yearsagowhenthefrostbetweenourcountriesbegantothawthroughthesimplegameoftabletennis.Th

10、everyunlikelynatureofthisengagementcontributedtoitssuccess-becauseforallourdifferences,bothourcommonhumanityandoursharedcuriositywererevealed.AsoneAmericanplayerdescribedhisvisittoChina-"ThepeoplearejustlikeusThecountryisverysimilartoAmerica,butstillverydifferent."Ofcoursethissmallopeningw

11、asfollowedbytheachievementoftheShanghaiCommunique,andtheeventualestablishmentofformalrelationsbetweentheUnitedStatesandChinain1979.Andinthreedecades,justlookathowfarwehavecome.In1979,tradebetweentheUnitedStatesandChinastoodatroughly$5billion-todayittopsover$400billioneachyear.Thecommerceaffectsourpe

12、ople'slivesinsomanyways.AmericaimportsfromChinamanyofthecomputerpartsweuse,theclotheswewear;andweexporttoChinamachinerythathelpspoweryourindustry.ThistradecouldcreateevenmorejobsonbothsidesofthePacific,whileallowingourpeopletoenjoyabetterqualityoflife.Andasdemandbecomesmorebalanced,itcanleadtoev

13、enbroaderprosperity.In1979,thepoliticalcooperationbetweentheUnitedStatesandChinawasrootedlargelyinoursharedrivalrywiththeSovietUnion.Today,wehaveapositive,constructiveandcomprehensiverelationshipthatopensthedoortopartnershiponthekeyglobalissuesofourtime-economicrecoveryandthedevelopmentofcleanenergy

14、;stoppingthespreadofnuclearweaponsandthescourgeofclimatechange;thepromotionofpeaceandsecurityinAsiaandaroundtheglobe.AlloftheseissueswillbeontheagendatomorrowwhenImeetwithPresidentHu.Andin1979,theconnectionsamongourpeoplewerelimited.Today,weseethecuriosityofthoseping-pongplayersmanifestedinthetiesth

15、atarebeingforgedacrossmanysectors.ThesecondhighestnumberofforeignstudentsintheUnitedStatescomefromChina,andwe'veseena50percentincreaseinthestudyofChineseamongourownstudents.Therearenearly200"friendshipcities"drawingourcommunitiestogether.AmericanandChinesescientistscooperateonnewresear

16、chanddiscovery.Andofcourse,YaoMingisjustonesignalofoursharedloveofbasketball-I'monlysorrythatIwon'tbeabletoseeaShanghaiSharksgamewhileI'mvisiting.Itisnocoincidencethattherelationshipbetweenourcountrieshasaccompaniedaperiodofpositivechange.Chinahasliftedhundredsofmillionsofpeopleoutofpove

17、rty-anaccomplishmentunparalleledinhumanhistory-whileplayingalargerroleinglobalevents.AndtheUnitedStateshasseenoureconomygrowalongwiththestandardoflivingenjoyedbyourpeople,whilebringingtheColdWartoasuccessfulconclusion.ThereisaChineseproverb:"Considerthepast,andyoushallknowthefuture."Surely

18、,wehaveknownsetbacksandchallengesoverthelast30years.Ourrelationshiphasnotbeenwithoutdisagreementanddifficulty.Butthenotionthatwemustbeadversariesisnotpredestined-notwhenweconsiderthepast.Indeed,becauseofourcooperation,boththeUnitedStatesandChinaaremoreprosperousandmoresecure.Wehaveseenwhatispossible

19、whenwebuilduponourmutualinterests,andengageonthebasisofmutualrespect.Andyetthesuccessofthatengagementdependsuponunderstanding-onsustaininganopendialogue,andlearningaboutoneanotherandfromoneanother.ForjustasthatAmericantabletennisplayerpointedout-wesharemuchincommonashumanbeings,butourcountriesaredif

20、ferentincertainways.Ibelievethateachcountrymustchartitsowncourse.Chinaisanancientnation,withadeeplyrootedculture.TheUnitedStates,bycomparison,isayoungnation,whosecultureisdeterminedbythemanydifferentimmigrantswhohavecometoourshores,andbythefoundingdocumentsthatguideourdemocracy.Thosedocumentsputforw

21、ardasimplevisionofhumanaffairs,andtheyenshrineseveralcoreprinciples-thatallmenandwomenarecreatedequal,andpossesscertainfundamentalrights;thatgovernmentshouldreflectthewillofthepeopleandrespondtotheirwishes;thatcommerceshouldbeopen,informationfreelyaccessible;andthatlaws,andnotsimplymen,shouldguarant

22、eetheadministrationofjustice.Ofcourse,thestoryofournationisnotwithoutitsdifficultchapters.Inmanyways-overmanyyears-wehavestruggledtoadvancethepromiseoftheseprinciplestoallofourpeople,andtoforgeamoreperfectunion.Wefoughtaverypainfulcivilwar,andfreedaportionofourpopulationfromslavery.Ittooktimeforwome

23、ntobeextendedtherighttovote,workerstowintherighttoorganize,andforimmigrantsfromdifferentcornersoftheglobetobefullyembraced.Evenaftertheywerefreed,AfricanAmericansperseveredthroughconditionsthatwereseparateandnotequal,beforewinningfullandequalrights.Noneofthiswaseasy.Butwemadeprogressbecauseofourbeli

24、efinthosecoreprinciples,whichhaveservedasourcompassthroughthedarkestofstorms.ThatiswhyLincolncouldstandupinthemidstofcivilwaranddeclareitastruggletoseewhetheranynation,conceivedinliberty,and"dedicatedtothepropositionthatallmenarecreatedequal"couldlongendure.ThatiswhyDr.MartinLutherKingcoul

25、dstandonthestepsoftheLincolnMemorialandaskthatournationliveoutthetruemeaningofitscreed.That'swhyimmigrantsfromChinatoKenyacouldfindahomeonourshores;whyopportunityisavailabletoallwhowouldworkforit;andwhysomeonelikeme,wholessthan50yearsagowouldhavehadtroublevotinginsomepartsofAmerica,isnowabletose

27、toinformationandpoliticalparticipation-webelieveareuniversalrights.Theyshouldbeavailabletoallpeople,includingethnicandreligiousminorities-whethertheyareintheUnitedStates,China,oranynation.Indeed,itisthatrespectforuniversalrightsthatguidesAmerica'sopennesstoothercountries;ourrespectfordifferentcu

28、ltures;ourcommitmenttointernationallaw;andourfaithinthefuture.TheseareallthingsthatyoushouldknowaboutAmerica.IalsoknowthatwehavemuchtolearnaboutChina.Lookingaroundatthismagnificentcity-andlookingaroundthisroom-Idobelievethatournationsholdsomethingimportantincommon,andthatisabeliefinthefuture.Neither

29、theUnitedStatesnorChinaiscontenttorestonourachievements.ForwhileChinaisanancientnation,youarealsoclearlylookingaheadwithconfidence,ambition,andacommitmenttoseethattomorrow'sgenerationcandobetterthantoday's.Inadditiontoyourgrowingeconomy,weadmireChina'sextraordinarycommitmenttoscienceandr

30、esearch-acommitmentborneoutineverythingfromtheinfrastructureyoubuildtothetechnologyyouuse.Chinaisnowtheworld'slargestInternetuser-whichiswhyweweresopleasedtoincludetheInternetasapartoftoday'sevent.Thiscountrynowhastheworld'slargestmobilephonenetwork,anditisinvestinginthenewformsofenergyt

31、hatcanbothsustaingrowthandcombatclimatechange-andI'mlookingforwardtodeepeningthepartnershipbetweentheUnitedStatesandChinainthiscriticalareatomorrow.Butaboveall,IseeChina'sfutureinyou-youngpeoplewhosetalentanddedicationanddreamswilldosomuchtohelpshapethe21stcentury.I'vesaidmanytimesthatIb

32、elievethatourworldisnowfundamentallyinterconnected.Thejobswedo,theprosperitywebuild,theenvironmentweprotect,thesecuritythatweseek-allofthesethingsareshared.Andgiventhatinterconnection,powerinthe21stcenturyisnolongerazero-sumgame;onecountry'ssuccessneednotcomeattheexpenseofanother.Andthatiswhythe

34、atmoreistobegainedwhengreatpowerscooperatethanwhentheycollide.Thatisalessonthathumanbeingshavelearnedtimeandagain,andthatistheexampleofthehistorybetweenournations.AndIbelievestronglythatcooperationmustgobeyondourgovernment.Itmustberootedinourpeople-inthestudiesweshare,thebusinessthatwedo,theknowledgethatwegain,andeveninthesportsthatweplay.Andthesebridgesmustbebuiltbyyoungmen
