allverywell.MynameisTimothyTreadwell,andIlivewiththewildgrizzly.\TimothyTreadwell(April29,1957-October5,2003),bornTimothyDexter,gaveawarningherethatweshouldallpayattentionto.Animals,particularlythebearsheknewwell,canbedeadly.Asitturnsout,Treadwellshould'vetakenhisownadviceandrespectedthedangertheseanimalspresent.Heshould'vekepthisdistancefromthem.Ifhehad,hemightbewithustoday.WhowasTimothyTreadwell?TreadwellwasanenvironmentalistandbearenthusiastwholivedamongtheCoastalbrownbearsofKatmaiNationalParkinAlaskaforapproximately13seasons.Attheendofhisthirteenthseasonintheparkin2003,heandhisgirlfriendAmieHuguenard(age37)werekilledandpartiallyeatenbyabrownbear.Theattackwasnotablebecauseoftheunusuallifestyleofthevictims,andthesurvivalofanaudiorecordingoftheattack.Treadwell'slife,work,anddeathwerethesubjectofthe2005documentaryfilmbyWernerHerzogtitledGrizzlyMan.LifeStoryBorninLongIsland,NewYork,muchofwhatisknownofTimothyTreadwell'slifeisdocumentedbyTreadwellhimself.Treadwellcharacterizedhimselfasanactor,recoveringalcoholic,formerdruguser,andheroofthewild.Accordingtohispersonalaccounts,hebecameinvolvedwithdrugsafterfailingtogaintherolewonbyWoodyHarrelsonintheTVcomedyCheers.Treadwellclaimedtohisparentsthathewassecond-choicefortherole,butthishasnotbeenindependentlyverified.InterestinbearsAfterseveralvisitstoAlaskaintheearly1990's,Treadwellbecameinterestedinbearsand,inthelast5yearsofhislife,documentedmanyofhisexperiencesandinteractionswithbearsviahomevideo.Treadwellattributedhisrecoveryfromdrugusetohisrelationshipwithbears.8/13
By2001,Treadwellbecamenotableenoughtoreceiveextensivemediaattentionbothontelevisionandinenvironmentalcircles.Throughhisvideos,hebecameknownforattemptingtocreatepersonalrelationshipswiththebearsheworkedwith.Asanactivist,heactivelycommunicatedwiththepublic,includingtravelingthroughouttheUnitedStatestoeducateschoolchildrenaboutbears,andappearingontheDiscoveryChannel,LateShowwithDavidLetterman,andDatelineNBCtodiscusshisexperiences.Hewasalsoaco-author,withJewelPalovak,ofthebookAmongGrizzlies:LivingwithWildBearsinAlaska,wherehedescribedhisadventuresinAlaska.Treadwell,alongwithhisfriendsJewelPalovak,andformerAmericanGladiatorJonathanByrnefoundedGrizzlyPeople,apoliticalorganizationdevotedtoprotectingbearsandpreservingtheirwildernesshome.Despitetheorganization'sname,Treadwelldidnotassociatewithgrizzlybears,atermproperlyappliedonlytobrownbearsthatlivefartherinland.DeathInOctober2003,Treadwellandhisgirlfriend,AmieHuguenard,visitedKatmaiNationalParkinAlaska.Treadwell,whonevercarriedanymeansofdefenseagainstbearattacks,chosetosethiscampsitenearastreamwherebearscommonlyfeedinthefall.Treadwellwasintheparklaterintheyearthanusual,atatimewhenbearsfighttogainasmuchfataspossiblebeforewinter,andlimitedfoodsuppliescausethemtobemoreaggressivethaninothermonths.Ithasbeennotedthatfoodwasscarcethatfall,andthebearswerethereforemoreaggressivethanusual.OnOctober6,2003,TreadwellandHuguenard'sbodieswerediscoveredbytheKodiakairtaxipilotwhoarrivedattheircampsitetopickthemupfromtheirtrip.Alargeelderlymalebear(taggedBear141)protectingthecampsitewaskilledbyparkpolicewhiletheyattemptedtogetthebodies.Asecondadolescentbearwaskilledashorttimelaterafteritchargedtheparkpolice.Itwaslatershownthatthefirstanimalhad9/13
consumedpartsofthecouples'remains.ThisbearisnotbelievedtobeoneofthebearsTreadwellusuallyencountered,thoughthispointisdisputed.Avideocamera,withthelenscapinplace,wasrecoveredatthesite.Thevideocamerahadbeenturnedonatsomepointduringthefatalattack,presumablybyHuguenard,butthecamerarecordedonlysixminutesofaudiobeforerunningoutoftape.Treadwell'shead,partialbackbone,andleftarmandhandstillwearinghiswristwatchwererecoveredatthescene.Huguenard'spartialbodywasfoundnearbysomewhatburiedindirt.MethodsandCriticismTreadwell'smethodsweregenerallythoughtunsoundbybearexpertsandpublicalike.Henamedmanyofthebearsheencounteredandoftenmovedcloseenoughtothemthathecouldtouchthemandinteractwiththemonapersonallevel.Manywildlifeexpertsobjectedtohismethods,believingthathisattitudetowardthebearswastoobrave,thatheignoredwell-knowndangersofworkingwithbears,andthathethoughtofthemtoomuchaspeople.Expertsalsobelievethatheendangeredtheanimalsbymakingthemtoocomfortablewithhumans,thusincreasingthelikelihoodofdangerousencountersinthefuture.Hisdeathbybearattackisseenbysomeasanaturalconclusionofhismethodsofinteractingwithbears.HiscriticsalsonotethatwhileTreadwellbelievedthathewasprotectingbears,controlexpertshavestatedthatincidentsofillegalhuntingintheareawerelowanddidnotaffectthepopulationlevel.However,accordingtothe\fivebearswerekilledintheyearafterhisdeath,whilenonehadbeenkilledwhilehewaspresentinKatmai.Thislastpointisdisputed.GrizzlyMan,theFilm10/13
