1Travelelsewhereisontherise.Aslongasthepopulationincreases,wealthincreases,andtransportationtechnologyimproves,thetourismindustrywillkeepgrowing.Infact,tourismhasrisenatsuchafastratethatitisnowconsideredoneofthelargestindustriesonEarth.What’simportantfortravelerstorealizeisthatwehaveahugeimpactontheplaceswevisit—we’renotjustoutsiderslookingin.

2Whentourismiswellmanaged,itcansaveaplace.Whenpeoplecometoseesomethingspecialanduniquetoanarea—itsnature,historicstructures,greatculturalevents,beautifullandscapes,evenspeciallocalfood—theyareenjoyingandlearningmoreaboutadestination’sgeographicalcharacter.That’swhypeoplearepromotingtheuseofthenewtermgeotourism,whichmeanstosustainorenhancethegeographicalcharacterofaplace—itsenvironment,culture,aesthetics,heritage,andthewell-beingofitsresidents.Heretravelersspendtheirmoneyinawaythathelpsmaintainthegeographicaldiversityanddistinctivenessoftheplacethey’revisiting.Itcanbeassimpleasspendingyourmoneyatalittlerestaurantthatservesaregionaldishwithingredientsfromlocalfarmersratherthanataninternationalfastfoodcompanythatservesthesamefoodyoucangetbackhome.

3Tourismcanalsopreservethingsthatwouldotherwisedisappear.AgoodexampleofthisistheMaineWindjammerfleet,acollectionofoldwoodensailingvesselsthatusedtoshipcargoupanddownthecoast.Oncetheeraofsteamcameabout,thesevesselsbegandisappearing.Fortunately,beforetheyweregoneentirely,somebodyrealizedthatpeoplewouldpaytotakevacationsonthem.They’relovelytolookat,andtheyleaveaverysmallenvironmentalmark,andmealsthatareservedonboardarepreparedwithlocalingredients.Nowtheyhaveevenbuiltnewvessels.Tourismhasbroughtback,inmodifiedform,awayoflifethatwealmostlost.

4Greattourismcanbuildsomethingthatwasn’ttherebefore.OnefavoriteexampleistheMontereyBayAquariuminCalifornia.Theaquarium,whichhasabout1.8millionvisitorseachyear,broughtpeople’sattentiontotheincrediblevarietyofsealiferightoffthecoastofCalifornia.AnditplayedamajorroleinthedevelopmentoftheMontereyBayNationalMarineSanctuary.Oncepeoplesawwhatwasthere,theywantedtoprotectit.

5However,iftourismisbadlymanaged,itwilldestroyaplace.Coasts,forexample,areextremelyvulnerable.Everyonewantstogothere.Everyonewantstoownasecondhomeonthem.Andthere’sjustnotenoughcoasttogoaround.Coastsarealsoimportantforbiodiversity,becausemanyseacreatureshavetheirnurseriesincoastlineareas.Sodevelopmentintheseareasisahighlysensitiveissue.ThesamethinggoesforattractivemountainsidesliketheRockiesoftheWest.That’swhywhendevelopmentoccursonalargescaleit’simportantthatitbecarefullyplanned.6Then,whathappenstoadestinationafteryearsofheavytraffic?Here’sanotherexample.AtthePetrifiedForest(innortheastArizona)it’sveryeasytobenddown,pickupalittlebitofpetrifiedwood,andpocketit.Peoplethinkit’sonlyonepebble,insuchavastarea,soitmakesnodifferenceiftheytakeit.Butsincemillionsofvisitorsovertheyearshavethoughtthesamething,allofthepebbleshavedisappeared,whichmakesthePetrifiedForestlessandlessspecial.Sowhenyou’retalkingaboutanentirelocationlikeatown,astretchofcoastline,awildarea,oranationalpark,it’simportanttolistentoparkrangerswhentheytellyouwheretogoandnottogo,whattodoandnottodo.SmallsitesliketheAcropolisinAthens,Greece,aremosthelplessbecauseallthefoottravelersareconcentratedinonetinyspot.Inthissituation,itisextremelyimportanttocontroltrafficflowtominimizedamagetothesite.
