astudyisthatlanguageatalltimeshasbeenthepossessionnotofoneclassorgroupbutofmany.[Atoneextreme

ithasbeenthepropertyofthecommon,ignorantfolk,whohaveuseditinthedailybusinessoftheirliving,muchas

theyhaveusedtheiranimalsorthekitchenpotsandpans.J?Attheotherextremeithasbeenthetreasureofthose

whohaverespecteditasaninstrumentandasignofcivilization,andwhohavestruggledbywritingitdowntogive

itsomepermanence,order,dignity,andifpossible,alittlebeauty.

Asweconsiderourchanginglanguage,weshouldnoteheretwodevelopmentsthatareofspecialandimmediateimportance

tous.OneisthatsincethetimeoftheAnglo-Saxonstherehasbeenanalmostcompletereversalofthedifferentdevices

forshowingtherelationshipofwordsinasentence.Anglo-Saxon(oldEnglish)wasalanguageofmanyinflections.Modern

Englishhasfewinflections.Wemustnowdependlargelyonwordorderandfunctionwordstoconveythemeaningsthatthe

olderlanguagedidbymeansofchangesintheformsofwords.Functionwords,youshouldunderstand,arewordssuchas

prepositions,conjunctions,andafewothersthatareusedprimarilytoshowrelationshipsamongotherwords.Afewinflections,

however,havesurvived.Andwhensomewordinflectionscomeintoconflictwithwordorder,theremaybetroublefortheusers

ofthelanguage,asweshallseelaterwhenweturnourattentiontosuchmatersasWHOorWHOMandMEorI.Thesecondfact

wemustconsideristhataslanguageitselfchanges,ourattitudestowardlanguageformschangealso.IfTheeighteenthcentury,
