InformationGettinghelpIfyouorsomeoneyouknowdevelopsthesymptomsofamentalillness,itisimportanttogetitdiagnosedandtostarttreatmentassoonaspossible.Mentalillnessiscommon.StatisticsshowthatoneineveryfiveCanadianswillhaveamentalhealthproblematsomepointintheirlives.Mentalillnessesaccountforalargepercentageofhospitalstayseveryyear.Yet,inspiteofthefactthateveryCanadianknowssomeonewhohasbeen,orwillbe,affectedbymentalillness,fewpeopleknowverymuchaboutit.Itishumannaturetofearwhatwedon’tunderstand.Assuch,mentalillnessisfearedbymanypeopleand,unfortunately,stillcarriesastigma(astigmaisdefinedasamarkorsignofdisgrace).Becauseofthisstigma,manypeoplehesitatetogethelpforamentalhealthproblemforfearofbeinglookeddownupon.Itisunfortunatethatthishappensbecauseeffectivetreatmentexistsforalmostallmentalillnesses.Worse,thestigmaexperiencedbypeoplewithamentalillnesscanbemoredestructivethantheillnessitself.Text-related

InformationPeoplewithmentaldisordersare,manytimes,notdescribedaccuratelyorrealisticallyinthemedia.Movies,televisionandbooksoftenpresentpeoplewithmentalillnessesasdangerousorunstable.Newsstoriessometimeshighlightmentalillnesstocreateasensationinanewsreport,evenifthementalillnessisnotrelevanttothestory.Advertisersusewordslike“crazy”toconveythattheirpricesareunrealisticallylowandtosuggesttheconsumercantakeadvantageofthem.Text-related
