Nineteenyearsagoalmosttothedaywelostthreeastronautsinaterribleaccidentontheground.Butwe'veneverlostanastronautinflight.We'veneverhadatragedylikethis.

Andperhapswe'veforgottenthecourageittookforthecrewoftheshuttle.ButtheytheChallengerSevenwereawareofthedangersbutovercamethemanddidtheirjobsbrilliantly.Wemournsevenheroes:MichaelSmithDickScobeeJudithResnikRonaldMcNairEllisonOnizukaGregoryJarvisandChristaMcAuliffe.

Wemourntheirlossasanationtogether.

Forthefamiliesofthesevenwecannotbearasyoudothefullimpactofthistragedy.Butwefeelthelossandwe'rethinkingaboutyousoverymuch.Yourlovedonesweredaringandbraveandtheyhadthatspecialgracethatspecialspiritthatsays"GivemeachallengeandI'llmeetitwithjoy."Theyhadahungertoexploretheuniverseanddiscoveritstruths.Theywishedtoserveandtheydid.Theyservedallofus.

We'vegrownusedtowondersinthiscentury.It'shardtodazzleus.Butfortwenty-fiveyearstheUnitedStatesspaceprogramhasbeendoingjustthat.We'vegrownusedtotheideaofspaceandperhapsweforgetthatwe'veonlyjustbegun.We'restillpioneers.TheythemembersoftheChallengercrewwerepioneers.

AndIwanttosaysomethingtotheschoolchildrenofAmericawhowerewatchingthelivecoverageoftheshuttle'stake-off.Iknowit'shardtounderstandbutsometimespainfulthingslikethishappen.It'sallpartoftheprocessofexplorationanddiscovery.It'sallpartoftakingachanceandexpandingman'shorizons.Thefuturedoesn'tbelongtothefainthearted;itbelongstothebrave.TheChallengercrewwaspullingusintothefutureandwe'llcontinuetofollowthem.

I'vealwayshadgreatfaithinandrespectforourspaceprogram.Andwhathappenedtodaydoesnothingtodiminishit.Wedon'thideourspaceprogram.Wedon'tkeepsecretsandcoverthingsup.Wedoitallupfrontandinpublic.That'sthewayfreedomisandwewouldn'tchangeitforaminute.

We'llcontinueourquestinspace.Therewillbemoreshuttleflightsandmoreshuttlecrewsandyesmorevolunteersmoreciviliansmoreteachersinspace.Nothingendshere;ourhopesandourjourneyscontinue.

IwanttoaddthatIwishIcouldtalktoeverymanandwomanwhoworksforNASAorwhoworkedonthismissionandtellthem:"Yourdedicationandprofessionalismhavemovedandimpressedusfordecades.Andweknowofyouranguish.Weshareit."

There'sacoincidencetoday.OnthisdaythreehundredandninetyyearsagothegreatexplorerSirFrancisDrakediedaboardshipoffthecoastofPanama.Inhislifetimethegreatfrontiersweretheoceansandahistorianlatersaid"Helivedbytheseadiedonitandwasburiedinit."WelltodaywecansayoftheChallengercrew:TheirdedicationwaslikeDrake'scomplete.

ThecrewofthespaceshuttleChallengerhonoredusbythemannerinwhichtheylivedtheirlives.Wewillneverforgetthemnorthelasttimewesawthemthismorningastheypreparedfortheirjourneyandwavedgoodbyeand"slippedthesurlybondsofearth"to"touchthefaceofGod."

TorealizethevalueofONESECOND,askapersonwhojustavoidedanaccident.

TorealizethevalueofONEMILLISECOND,askthepersonwhowonasilvermedalintheOlympics.

Treasureeverymomentthatyouhave!Andtreasureitmorebecauseyoushareditwithsomeonespecial,specialenoughtospendyourtimewith.
