Gist:Superficiallythestoryofayoungman'sexpulsionfromyetanotherschool,'TheCatcherInTheRye'isinfactaperceptivestudyofoneindividual'sunderstandingofhishumancondition.HoldenCaulfield,hasbeenexpelledschoolforpoorachievementonceagain.Inanattempttodealwiththisheleavesschoolafewdayspriortotheendofterm,andgoestoNewYorkto'takeavacation'beforereturningtohisparents'inevitablewrath.Toldasamonologue,thebookdescribesHolden'sthoughtsandactivitiesoverthesefewdays,duringwhichhedescribesadevelopingnervousbreakdown.However,duringhispsychologicalbattle,lifecontinuesonaroundHoldenasitalwayshad,withthemajorityofpeopleignoringthe'madmanstuff'thatishappeningtohim-untilitbeginstoencroachontheirwelldefinedsocialcodes.Progressivelythroughthenovelwearechallengedtothinkaboutsociety'sattitudetothehumancondition-doessocietyhavean'ostrichinthesand'mentality,adeliberateignoranceoftheemptinessthatcancharacterizehumanexistence?MycommentAlthoughprotagonistHoldenCaulfieldisacharacterthatbelongstohalfcenturyago,butfiftyyearslater,Icanstillstronglyfeelwhathehadfeltabout,especiallywhentheidealandrealityiscontradictory.Whenthesocialunrestmadepeopletiredout,theyusedthepsychedelictoescapefromreality,toindulgencethemselves.ButnotthesametoHoldenCaulfield,whoalwayshadapurelandwithoutpollutioninhishearttowatchtherye.Thebiggestsorrowtopeopleisthatwhenwewakeup,wedon’tknowwhereshouldwego.Holdenwassouredabouthergirlfriend’svanity,butatthesametime,becauseofhergreatbeauty,hecouldn’thelpherselftokissher.Hisspiritualworldandtherealityoneconflictwithviolent.Ononehand,heisawake.Hesawthehypocrisyvulgarsideofthecapitalistsociety.Ontheotherhand,heislost.Healwaysdosomethingthatagainsthisideal.AftertheSecondWorldWar,thepeoplewhohadsufferedalotinthecruelwarfarecouldnotfoundcomfortwhiletheirheartswereextremeemptiness.Andsocialturbulencemakethemgetlostaswell.Holden’slivingenvironmentlikeafilthybigdyeingtank,comeupwithsiltbutdon'tdyeishard.Itisreallysad.Inall,Holdenisacontradictedboy.Heiseagertogetawayfromsuchkindoftheworldandlookforthesliceofidealofrye,butatthesametime,hewasinimperceptibleaffec
