HetoldtheBBCradioprogrammeTheWhyFactorthatitcomesdowntoa

naturalhormonecalledprolactin.Hesays:"asyoumighthaveguessedfromthename,

it'sassociatedwithlactation7frombreast-feeding.Whenpeoplecry,theyalsorelease

prolactin.And,therearecircumstancesinwhichprolactinseemstohave

thiscomfortingeffect/'Itseemsthatpeoplewholikesadmusicaremaybegettingtoo

muchprolactin,ormorethanisnormal,andwhentheyhearsad,downbeatmusic,it

givesthemagoodfeeling.Butifprolactinisn'treleased,orthereisn'tenoughofit,some

peoplefindthatsadsoundsdon'thelptocheerthemup.

PreviousresearchbyDurhamUniversityhasalsosuggestedthatlisteningtosad

musiccantriggerpainandsadness;butitcanalsoprovidecomfortandevenenjoyment.

Ahighnumberofpeopletheysurveyedwerecheeredupbylisteningtosupposedlysad

songs.Thoughthefeelingmaynotbeexactlythesameashappiness,itmaybetheability

tocopewiththesadnessthatgivesthefeelingofcomfort.

So,reactingtosadmusicontheradiomayhavenothingtodowith

themelancholicsoundofastringquartetorasingerwho'sgottheblues,butrathera
