OnOctober5th,2022,ChinafinallyhaditsfirstNobelPrizeinnaturalscience.Ms.TuYouyou’sworkandherreceivingthemostprestigiousscienceawardmadeusproud.We’relivinginanerainwhichChinaisbuildingsomeofthebestresearchprojectsandinstitutionsworldwide.Justamonthago,ProfessorZhangMimanwontheUNESCOforWomeninScienceAward,makingherthefifthChineserecipientofthishonor.Aweekafterthat,TheEconomistreferredtoChinaas“acontinent-sizedrapidlygrowingeconomywithacultureofscientificinquiry”.PhysicistandvicepresidentoftheChineseAcademyofScience,Dr.ZhangJiestated,“Chinanowhasthemostaccurate,sufficientandlargestamountofdata;Chinahasthehighest,fastestandbestabilityofdataanalysis.TheChinesegovernmentwillbestronglypushingforthesharingandutilizationofdataresources.”Weasacountrysaywe’reready.

Scienceisanimmortaltopicofmankind.We’vecomethisfarbecausewe’velearnedtoworktogetherandlettheideasevolve.Thedisputeoverthecompletenessofquantummechanics,fore*ample,wasresolvedinthe5thSolvayconference,attendedby29physicistsfrom10differentcountrieswhohavewon15NobelPrizescombined.Thatwasalmost100yearsago.Nowwe’relivinginanerainwhichinformationistransmittedatthespeedoflight,inwhich“Internationalcooperation”isnotjustaslogananymore,especiallytothescientificcommunity.ChineseAcademyofSciencenowhas47partnersoverseas.TheInternationalCouncilforSciencenowincludes122nationalmembers,23scientificassociatesand31scientificunions.ThefacilitiesoftheEuropeanOrganizationforNuclearResearch,orCERN,areavailabletoover600universitiesandinstitutesaroundtheglobe.We,theworld,aremorethanready.

Ourancestorslikedtobuildwalls.TheybuiltwallsinBeijing,*ian,Nanjingandmanyothercities,andtheybuilttheGreatWall,whichsnakesthroughhalfofourcountry.Theybuiltwallstowardoffenemiesandevilspirits.Thistraditionhasbeenmaintainedtothisdayaswestillhavemanyparksandschoolswalledofffromthepublic.Igrewupatthefootofthecitywalls,andIvelovedthemsincemychildhood.Foralongtime,wallswereoneofthemostnaturalthingsintheworld.

Likeotheryoungmen,Ilovetheinternet.Tobehonest,Icouldnotimaginealifewithoutinternet,whichisablessingtakenbyhightechnology.Tosomee*tent,itrepresentsthewholeworldtome.IhaveregisteredsomeaccountsonMySpace,Facebook,Twitter,Renren,Weiboandsoforth.It’sreallyamazingbecausethesenetworktechnologiesmakeitpossibleforpeopleallovertheworldtocommunicatewitheachotherfreelyandconveniently.
