詞匯精講
1.other,theother,others,another
(1)other是形容詞,意為“其他的,別的”,其后多接可數(shù)名詞。例如:
I'mafraidthereareotherwaysofsolvingthisproblem.恐怕還有其他的解決這個問題的方法。
(2)others相當于other+可數(shù)名詞復數(shù)形式,代詞,指“其他人或物”,相當于一個復數(shù)名詞。例如:
Somepeopleenjoyexercise;othersdon't.有些人喜歡運動,有些人則不喜歡。
(3)theothers則表示在一個特定范圍內(nèi)的其他的全部,表示特指,意為“其余的”。例如:
Youshouldhelptheothersinyourclass.你應(yīng)該幫助班里的其他人。
(4)theother意為“兩個人或事物中的另一個”;表示特指,通常與one搭配使用,構(gòu)成“one...theother...
意為“一個……另一個……例如:
MissGaohasabookinonehand,andapenintheother.高老師一只手拿書,另一只手拿鋼筆。
(5)another后通常跟單數(shù)名詞,也可泛指單數(shù)名詞,意為“不確定數(shù)目中的另一個例如:
Pleaseshowmeanother(one).請再拿一個給我看看。
2.else和other
else和。ther都是形容詞,意為“別的;其他的"。但兩者用法不同。
(1)else常用于修飾不定代詞,疑問代詞或疑問副詞,也可以修飾all,much,little等詞,修飾這些詞時,
else要位于其后,作后置定語。例如:
Wouldyoutrysomethingelse?你要試試別的嗎?
NobodyelseinmyschoolcomesfromAmerica.我們學校沒有其它人來自美國。
Areyougoinganywhereelse?你們另外還要去哪里?
(2)other作形容詞,用以修飾名詞或代詞,作定語。例如:
Wherearetheotherbooks?其他的書在哪里?
Doyouhaveanyotherquestions?你還有別的問題嗎?
(3)other作代詞,可以單獨作主語、賓語、表語,其復數(shù)形式為others。例如:
Somestudentsareplayingunderthetree.Othersareflyingkitesoverthere.
一些學生在樹下玩,還有一些在那邊放風箏。
3.giveup
giveup是動詞短語,意為“放棄;停止;戒除",giveupdoingsomething意為“放棄做某事;半途而廢”。
例如:
Iwillnevergiveupmydream.我永遠都不會放棄我的夢想。
Thedoctorshadgivenherupbutshemadearemarkablerecovery.
醫(yī)生們已放棄了治愈她的希望,而她卻恢復得很好。
Youshouldgiveupsmoking,whichisgoodforyourhealth.
你應(yīng)該戒煙,這對你的健康有好處。

4.improve
improve是動詞,意為“改進;改善;提高”。例如:
TheirFrenchhasimprovedalot.
他們的法語水平提高了很多。
NevermissachancetoimproveyourEnglish.
不要放過任何機會來提高你的英語。
【注意】
improve的意思是“改進;使更好(makebetter)”,已包含better之意,因而不能再與better連用。
【拓展】
improvement是名詞,意為"改善;改進;提高”。
例如:
Thisessayrepresentsaconsiderableimprovementonyourrecentwork.
這篇論文說明你最近的工作取得了相當大的改進。
5.patient
(1)patient作為形容詞,意為“有耐性的;忍耐的”。它的名詞形式patience,意思是“耐心;容忍”。
例如:
Hewasendlesslykindandpatientwithchildren,他對孩子們總是非常好,很有耐心。
Itwashardworkandrequiredallhispatience.工作很艱巨,需要他有極大的耐心。
(2)patient還可以作名詞,意為“病人”。例如:
Theearlierthetreatmentisgiven,thebetterthepatient'schances.
病人越早接受治療,康復的可能性就越大。
Shewastoughbutwonderfulwithherpatients.
她很嚴厲,但對患者卻很好。
6.provide
provide為及物動詞,意為“提供”,常和with搭配。providesb.withsth.表示“為某人提供某物”,其同
意表達為providesth.forsb.o例如:
TheSunprovidesuswithlightandheat.
太陽給我們提供光和熱。
Sheepprovideuswithwool./Sheepprovidewoolforus.
羊為我們提供羊毛。
7.runoutof&runout
runoutrunoutof這兩個短語都有“用完”的意思,但用法不同。runout作不及物動詞短語,表示
“被用完;被耗盡”,其主語通常是時間、金錢、食物等無生命的名詞。而runoutof則是及物動詞短
語,表示主動。例如:
Hisholidayranout.他的假期用完了。
Hehasrunoutofmoney.他的錢用完了。
Werunoutofwater,andhadtocarrysome.我們的水用完了,所以必須去挑一些了。
8.dependon
dependon意為“視……而定;取決于;依靠”,其后可跟名詞、代詞或從句作賓語,on也可以換為
UpOHo例如:
一Whenshallwestart?我們什么時候動身?
一Itdependson(upon)theweather.依天氣情況而定。
Hedependedonhisuncleafterhisfatherdied.父親去世后,他依靠他的叔叔。

(2)enough還可作副詞,意為“足夠的”,這時enough需放在所修飾的形容詞或副詞后面。例如:

2.Britishpeopleareverypoliteathomeaswell,aren*tthey?
aswell常用作狀語,作“又也”解,相當于too或also,常位于句末,無須用逗號與句子分開。例如:
IamgoingtoLondonandmysisterisgoingaswell.
我要到倫敦去,我妹妹也要去。
【拓展】
(1)aswellas也作“也,還”講,常用來連接兩個并列的成分,一般位于句中。它強調(diào)的是前一項,
后一項只是順便提及。因此連接并列主語時,謂語動詞與前一項一致;翻譯時要先譯后面,再譯
前面。例如:
Yourwifeaswellasyouisfriendlytome.
不僅你而且你的妻子也對我很友好。
(2)aswellas可以用來表示同級比較,指“像/和……一樣好例如:

3.It'smeaningfultodosomethingfortheOlympics.
本句用T"Itis/was+adj.+todosth.”的結(jié)構(gòu),Itis/was+adj.+todosth.意為"做某事是...的”,todo
sth.為句子的真正的主語,而it為形式主語,形式主語不能用別的詞來代替,句中可在形容詞后加for
sb.,意為“對于某人來說,做某事是……的”。例如:
It9simportantforustostudyEnglishwell,對我們來說,學好英語是相當重要的。

對我們來說,有規(guī)律的做運動是很必要的。

這個句型中的forsb.有時也可以用ofsb.二者意義有區(qū)別:
(1)在心+時:+forsb.todosth.中,forsb.意為“對某人來說”,句中的形容詞是用來說明todosth.
的,形式主語只能用ito例如:
It9snecessaryforthestudentstodosomehousework.對于學生們來說,做些家務(wù)是十分必要的。
(2)在It,s+時:+ofsb.todosth.中ofsb.意為“某人.......”,句中形容詞可與邏輯主語sb.構(gòu)成系
表結(jié)構(gòu),即形容詞是用來說明或形容sb.(某人)的。例如:

5.treatsomethingusedsothatitcanbeusedagain

so…that…的意思是“如此...以至于....”,它引導結(jié)果狀語從句。在口語中,so…that…的that常
被省去。例如:
