Duringdiveslastingabout30minutes,thesealswentintoadeepsleepcalledslowwavesleepwhilekeepinga

controlleddownwardmovement.Whentheythenexperiencedrapideyemovement(REM)sleep,thesealsfellintoa

turningpattern.Then,atthedeepestpointoftheirsleepingdive-upto377metersdeep-theywakeupandswim

backtothesurface.

TerrieWilliamsisascientistattheUniversityofCaliforniaatSantaCruzwhohelpedwritethestudy.She

said,64Itisremarkablethatawildanimalwillfallintodeep,paralyticREMsleepwhentherearepredatorsonthe
