Duringthetan-yearperiodbetween1994and2004,theFDAapproved321
completelynewdrugs(thisdoesn'tincludeapprovalsforchangestoexisting
medicines),bringingthetotaltomorethan10,000drugproductsonthe
market.Duringthatsameperiod,eightdrugswerewithdrawnforreasonsof
safety,suchasthedietdrugfenfluramine(fen-phen,associatedwithheart-
valvedisease)andtheallergydrugSeldane(linkedtoheartan'hythmias).But
theVioxxrecallcreatedashockwavefortheAmericanconsumerlikeno
other.Manypeoplehadcometodependontheir"meals",andtheyexpected
themtobesafe,too,especiallywhentheycostsomuch.Prescriptiondrugs
accountfor,somesay,thefastestgrowingsegment(aboutone-tenth)ofall
healthexpenditures,withsomespecialtydrugscostinghundredsofdollars
