benefactorshavesucceededintheirchosenfields,theysay,andtheywanttouse
theirwealthtodrawattentiontothosewhohavesucceededinscience.
What'snottolike?Quitealot,accordingtoahandfulofscientistsquoted
intheNewsFeature.Youcannotbuyclass,astheoldsayinggoes,andtheseupstart
entrepreneurscannotbuytheirprizestheprestigeoftheNobels,Thenewawards

andothers〃to"maintainnationalexcellenceinhumanitiesandsocialscientific
scholarshipandeducation./zInresponse,theAmericanAcademyformedthe
CommissionontheHumanitiesandSocialSciences.Amongthecommission,s51
membersaretop-tier-universitypresidents,scholars,lawyers,judges,and
businessexecutives,aswellasprominentfiguresfromdiplomacy,filmmaking,
musicandjournalism.
Thegoalsidentifiedinthereportaregenerallyadmirable.Because
