BASICOPERATINGINSTRUCTIONS

1.SetFilmSpeed

Whiledepressingthetinybuttonatoptheshutterdial,turntherimoftheshutterdialuntiltheASAnumberofthefilmyouareusingiscenteredintheASAwindow.

2.CockRapid-WindLever

Cocktherapid-windleverallthewayuntilitstops.The"Cocked"indicatorwillturnred,showingthattheshutteriscocked.

3.SetShutterSpeed

Turntheshutterspeeddialuntilthespeedyouwanttouseisoppositetheindexmark.Generally,youshouldusethefastestpossibleshutterspeedtoavoidblurredpicturescausedbycameramovement.Trystartingwith1/125sec.outdoorsindaylightand1/30sec.indoors.

4.ComposingandFocusing

Whileviewingthroughthefinder,turnthefocusingringuntilyoursubjectcomesintosharpfocusandchoosethemostpleasingcomposition.

5.TurnonExposureMeterandRotateApertureRing

Pullouttherapid-windleverslightly(20°)anddepresstheshutterreleasebuttonhalfwaytoturnontheexposuremeter.Thepreselectedshutterspeedplusthetwoadjacentspeeds("60"and

"250"inthecaseof"125")arevisibleontheright-handsideoftheviewfinder.TurntheapertureringuntilthecentralgreenLEDdotglowswhichindicatesproperexposure.(Thef-stopyouhaveselectedisalsovisibleinthesmallwindowabovethefocusingscreen).Ifthecentralgreendotdoesnotglownomatterhowfaryouturntheaperturering,changetheshutterspeed.

6.ReleaseShutter

Holdyourcamerafirmlyandtriptheshutter.Thencocktherapid-windleverforthenextpicture.(Aslongastheleverisatitspre-advanceangle,thelightmeterstaysON.Ifyoupushitbacktothecompletelyclosedposition,themeteristurnedOFF.)

FILMLOADINGANDWINDINGSETTINGASAFILMSPEED

1.Openthebackbypullinguptherewindknobuntilthebackopens.

2.Placethefilmcartridgeinthefilmchamber,andpushdowntherewindknob.Insertthefilmleaderinbetweenanyofthewhiteplasticpinssurroundingthefilmtake-upspool.

3.Advancethefilmbyalternatelyadvancingtherapidwindleveranddepressingtheshutterbuttonuntilbothtopandbottomsprocketsengagethefilmperforations.Closethebackbypressingitfirmly.

4.Cocktherapid-windlever,andconfirmthatthefilmrewindknobturnscounterclockwise,indicatingthatthefilmisproperlyloadedandismovingfromcartridgetotake-upspool.Triptheshutter.Advancethefilmuntiltheexposurecounterturnsto"1",indicatingthatthefirstpictureisreadytobetaken.

TheASAfilmspeedratingofall35mmfilmsisgiveninthedatasheetpackedwitheachrolloffilm.ThehighertheASAnumber,themoresensitivethefilmistolight.WhiledepressingtheASAdiallockbutton,turntherim

oftheshutterdialuntiltheASAnumberofyourfilmisalignedwiththeindexmark.

BesuretosettheASAfilmspeedbecauseitiscoupledtotheexposuremetersystem.

SETTINGTHESHUTTERSPEEDDIALCOMPOSINGANDFOCUSING

Turntheshutterspeeddialclockwiseorcounter-clockwisetotheshutterspeeddesired.Theshutterspeedmaybeseteitherbeforeoraftercockingtherapid-windlever.Asyoucocktheshutterbyturningtherapid-windlever,the"cocked"indicatorturnsredshowingthattheshutteriscocked.Thecolorofthecockedindicatorchangestoblackaftertrippingtheshutter.ForuseoftheXsettingontheshutterspeeddial,refertopage18.

WiththeshutterspeeddialsetonB(bulb),theshutterwillstayopenaslongasyoudepresstheshutterbutton.Asyoureleaseyourfingerfromtheshutterbutton,theshuttercloses.Whenalongexposureisdesiredwhileusingthe8setting,settheshutterbuttonlockbymovingthelevertotheleft(an"L"becomesvisible)whiledepressingtheshutterbutton.Alternately,useacablereleasewithalockingdeviceforatimeexposure.

CAUTION:

Atlongspeeds,longerthan1/30(1/15-1sec.)supportyourcamerarigidlytopreventcameramovement.Toprotecttheshuttermechanism,triptheshutterbeforeputtingthecameraawayforanyextendedperiod.

COMPOSINGANDFOCUSING

ThestandardfocusingscreenofyourMXhasacentralsplit-imagecirclesurroundedbyamicroprismcollar.Whilelookingthroughtheviewfinder,turnthefocusingringuntilyoursubjectcomesintosharpfocus.Ifyoursubjectisnotinfocus,theimageinthesplit-imagecirclewillappeardividedintoupperandlowerportions,andtheimageinthemicroprismcollarwillappearbrokenintomanysmallfragments.

EXPOSUREMEASUREMENT

Whentherapid-windleverispulledout20°andtheshutterbuttonisdepressedhalfway,theexposuremeteristurnedON.TurntheapertureringtogetaproperLEDexposureread-outintheviewfinder.

Ontheright-handsideoftheviewfinder,appearthepreselectedshutterspeedplustwoadjacentspeeds(e.g."60"and"250"inthecaseof"125")onatransparentdiskwhichprotrudesslightlyintothefocusingscreenarea.

Ontheright-handsideoftheshutterspeedsshown,thereare5LEDdotswhicharenormallynotvisible.Ifyoudepresstheshutterbuttonhalfwayandtheexposureiscorrect,thecentralgreendotwillilluminate.Iftheexposureis1/2EVover,theorangedotnextto"250"(intheaboveexample)willglow;aswillthedotnextto"60"inthecaseof1/2EVunderexposure.Ifitis1EVormoreoverorunder,theappropriatereddotwillglowasawarningforadjustmentofeitherthef-stoportheshutterspeed,unlessyouwanttomakeintentionaloverorunderexposure.

Asageneralrule,yourcameracanbeheldmorefirmlyinthelefthand,whichdoesnotreleasetheshutter.Ifyouholdyourcamerawiththerighthand-thehandthatreleasestheshutter-thismaycausecameramovement.Often,blurredpicturesareduetocameramovement.

UNLOADINGFILM-AVOIDDIRECTLIGHTWHENUNLOADINGTHEFILM

Afterthefinalpictureontherollhasbeentaken,therapid-windleverwillnotadvancefurther,indicatingthatthefilmmustberewound.Liftuptherewindcrank.Depressthefilmrewindbuttonandturntherewindcrankasindicatedtorewindthefilmintoitscartridge.Rewinduntilthetensiononthecranklessens,indicatingthattheleaderendofthefilmhasbeenreleasedfromthetake-upspool.Pulloutthefilmrewindknob(thebackwillopenautomatically),andremovethefilmcartridge.

FLASHSYNCHRONIZATION

TheMXhasFPandXterminalsonthefrontofthecamerabody,andaseparateXcontactonthebuilt-inhotshoe.Thetableonthenextpageshowswhichflashcontact,whichshutterspeedandwhichflashbulbmaybecombinedformaximumlampefficiency.Unlessthesecombinationsarerigidlyfollowed,therewillbeafailureinflashsynchronization.Notethe"X"settingisexactlyatthe60markontheshutterspeeddial.Thisindicatesthehighestshutterspeedatwhichelectronicflashunitsmaybeused.UsethehotshoeflashcontactwhenusingashoemountelectronicflashlikethePentaxAutostrobwhichhasaflashcontactontheshoebracket.Whenusingthehotshoe,thereisnoneedtoplugtheflashcordintotheXterminalonthefrontofthebody.Thehotshoeflashcontactturnsto"hot"(switchedon)onlywhenyouinsertashoemountelectronicflash.Itremains"cold"(disconnected)evenwhenusinganelectronicflashwithitscordpluggedintotheXterminalonthebodyfront.Thiseliminatesthedangerofelectricshocks.

Therearebasicallytwotypesofflashbulbattachmentsonthemarket:clip-ontypesandbrackettypes.Eithercanbeusedwithyourcamera.Theclip-ontypesareattachedtothehotshoeandthebrackettypesareattachedviathetripodsocket.

Useoneofthesethreebulbtypes:M,MForFP.Thecorrectterminalandthecorrectshutterspeedtouseforeachofthesethreetypesareoutlinedinthetablebelow.Beforeattachingtheflashunittothecamera,youmustremovetheprotectiveplugfromtheproperterminal.Whennotusingtheterminals,keeptheplugsinserted.

DEPTH-OF-FIELDPREVIEWLEVERANDSCALE

Depthoffieldistherangebetweenthenearestandfarthestdistanceswhichareinfocusatagivenlensaperture.Ifyouwanttoknowhowgreatthedepthoffieldisatacertainaperture,focusonasubjectandlookthroughtheviewfinderwhilemovingtheSelf-timerlevertowardthelens,andyouwillbeabletopreviewthedepthoffield.

Or,afterfocusing,lookatthedepth-of-fieldscaleonthelens.Inthephotographbelow,thedistancescaleissetat5meters;thatis,thelensisfocusedonasubject5metersaway.Thecalibrationsoneachsideofthedistanceindexcorrespondtothediaphragmsettingandindicatetherangeofin-focusdistancefordifferentlensapertures.Forexample,ifalensopeningoff/4istobeused,therangeonthedistancescaleringcoveredwithinthefigure4onthedepth-of-fieldscaleindicatestheareainfocusatthatlensopening.Youwillnotefromthedepth-of-fieldscaleinthephotographthattherangefromapproximately4to7misinfocus.Notethatasthelensaperturechanges,theeffectivedepthoffieldalsochanges.Forthedepthsoffieldatdifferentaperturesanddistances,refertothenextpage.

METERCOUPLINGRANGE

TheexposuremeteroftheMXmeasuresthebrightnessofthegroundglass.Therefore,theproperLEDexposureread-outshouldbeobtainedafteryouhavefocusedyoursubjectonthegroundglass.Thegreenareainthetableindicatesthecouplingrangeofthemeter,andshouldnotbeinterpretedasthecamera'stotalrangeoff/stop-shutterspeedcombinations.Asyouwillnotefromthetablebelow,withASA100film,youmayuseanyshutterspeedfrom1sec.to1/1000sec.incombinationwithanyaperturethatwillilluminatethegreenLEDintheviewfinder.Thetotalrangeoftheaperturesettingsis,ofcourse,determinedbytheminimumandmaximumaperturesofthelensbeingused.Forexample,withthe50mmf/1.4lensandASA100film,anaperturefromf/1.4(themaximumapertureofthislens)tof/22(theminimumaperture)maybeusedwithanyshutterspeedfrom1sec.to1/1000sec.thatwillilluminatethegreenLED.

1.Asexposuremeasurementsmadeat1/1000sec.with25ASAfilmwillnotbeaccurate,exercisecaution.

2.Whenusingthe50mmf/1.4lens,accurateexposuremeasurementatthepointsfoundintheshadedareaintheabovetablecanbeguaranteedonlywhenusinguptof/16(f/1.4-f/16).

HELPFULHINTSONEXPOSUREPROBLEMS

TheexposuremeterbuiltintoyourMXtakesacenter-weightedreadingfromtheentiresceneasseenthroughtheviewfinder.Sometimes,however,thereisagreatdifferencebetweenthelightreflectedfromthebackgroundandthelightreflectedfromthesubject.Insuchacase,toachieveareallygoodphoto,youmustcompensateforthedifferencebyopeningorclosingdowntheaperture1or2stops.Asageneralrule,whenthesubjectisdarkerthanthebackground,youcompensatebyopeningyouraperture1or2stopsmore.Forexample:onabrightday,whenyoursubjecthashisbacktothesunandyouareshootingdirectlytowardthesun...orwhenyouareshootingasubjectagainstsnoworlight-coloredsand...orwhenyouarecopyingapageofblacklettersonwhitepaper,increasethesizeoftheaperturesomewhat.Whenyoursubjectisbrighterthanthebackground-ifheisstandinginaspotlight,forexample-youmaketheaperture1or2stopssmallertocompensate.

DUALCONTROLEXPOSURESYSTEM

Sinceboththeapertureandshutterspeedareindicatedwithintheviewfinder,youcancontrolexposurebyadjustingeithertheshutterspeeddialortheaperturering.Whentheaperturesizeisthemostimportantfactor,settheaperturedesiredbyturningtheaperturering.ThenadjusttheshutterspeeddialuntilthegreenLEDilluminates.

Whenshutterspeedisthemoreimportantfactor,turnthedialtothespeedyoudesire.ThenadjusttheapertureringuntilthegreenLEDilluminates.

SHUTTERBUTTONLOCK

TheshutterbuttonlockleverisforyourconveniencewhileyouaremakingaparticularlylongexposureusingtheBshutterspeedsetting.Afterdepressingtheshutterbutton,turnthelocklever(whichisonthecollaratthebaseoftheshutterbutton)sothattheletter"L"isvisible.Whentheexposuretimeisup,movethelockleverbacktoitsoriginalposition.Thisautomaticallyreleasestheshutterbutton.Inadditiontomaking"Time"exposure,thelockleverisalsousedtoturnoffthemetercircuitandsimultaneouslypreventaccidentalreleaseoftheshutter.

MANUALSHUTTEROPERATION

ThetwosilveroxidebatteriesinyourMXareusedonlyforpoweringtheexposuremeter;theshuttermechanismisatotallymanualoperation.Therefore,yourcameracanstillbeoperatedevenifthebatterieshavewornout.Ifthebatterieshavewornoutandtheexposuremeterisnolongerfunctioning,youmustdeterminethecorrectcombinationofshutterspeedandaperturesizeyourself,fromyourownexperience.Also,packedinwithmosttypesof35mmfilmisadatasheetwithsuggestionsfordeterminingthecorrectexposureinavarietyofsituations.

SELF-TIMER

TheSelf-timerdelaystheshutterreleaseby4-.12seconds,dependinguponhowfarcounterclockwise(whencamerafacesyou)theleverisadvanced.WhenusingtheSelf-timer,donotdepresstheshutterbutton...itwillimmediatelyreleasetheshutterwithoutdelayedaction.Aftercockingtherapid-windlever,advancetheSelf-timerlever

90°-180°.Then,pushthestartbutton,andtheSelf-timerwillcommence.

INFRA-REDPHOTOGRAPHY

Ifyouintendtotakeinfra-redphotographs,remembertousetheinfra-redmarkindicatedwithanorangelineonthedepth-of-fieldscale.First,bringyoursubjectintosharpfocus.Thendeterminethesubject-to-cameradistancefromthedistancescaleonthelens.Thenmatchyoursubject-to-cameradistancetotheinfra-redmarkbyturningthefocusingringaccordingly.

Forinstance,ifyoursubjectisinfocusatinfinity,turnthefocusingringandmovetheinfinity(00)marktotheinfra-redmark.

NOTE:Aninfra-redfocusingadjustmentisnotrequiredwhenworkingwithinfra-redcolorfilm.

MULTIPLEEXPOSURE

Fordeliberatemultipleexposures,makethefirstexposureinthenormalway.Thentightenthefilmbyturningtherewindknob

,andkeepholdoftherewindknob.Depressthefilmrewind

INTERCHANGEABLEFOCUSINGSCREENS

Inadditiontothestandardsplit-image+microprismfocusingscreen,thereare7otherinterchangeablefocusingscreensavailableforyourMX.

Toremovethestandardfocusingscreen,pullthescreenretainerpin

towardyouwiththepincettesuppliedwiththeinterchangeablefocusingscreen.Thefocusingscreenwillthenflipdown.Removethescreenfromtheframebygraspingtheprotrudingportionofthescreenwiththepincette.

Toinstallthescreenofyourchoice,placeitonthescreenframe,pushingitbacktotheoriginalpositionuntilitlockswithaclick.Toremovedustparticlesfromthescreen,neverwipeitwithacloth,orthelike,butjustuseablower.

USINGSCREW-MOUNTTAKUMARLENSES

Conventionalscrew-mountTakumarlenses(bothSuper-TakumarandSMCTakumar)canbeeasilymountedontoyourcamerabyattachingthemfirsttoaMountAdaptorK.However,whenAdaptorKisused,thefollowingistrue:

1.Duetothedifferenceincouplingsystems,theautomaticdiaphragmwillnotfunction.

2.Full-aperturemeteringlenseswillfunctionasstop-downmeteringlenses.

HowtoUseMountAdaptorK

1.ScrewtheconventionalTakumarlensintotheMountAdaptorK.

2.AttachtheAdaptor/lensunittothecamerabodybyaligningthereddotsand,andturningthelensclockwiseuntilitlockswithaclick.(Thistakesslightlylessthanaquarterofarevolution.)

3.Toremovethelens,leavingtheMountAdaptorKattachedtothecamerabody,simplyunscrewthelenscounterclockwise.Otherscrew-mount

Takumarlensescanthenbeattachedinthenormalway.

ToremovetheMountAdaptorKfromthecamerabody,firstremovethescrew-mountlens.Thenpress,withyourthumbnailorapointedobjectsuchasaballpointpen,againstthespringpin

TurntheMountAdaptorKcounterclockwiseuntilyoufeelitrelease,andtakeitout.

SincethemechanismforlockingintheMountAdaptorKistotallydifferentfromthatwhichlocksinanSMCPentaxbayonet-mountlens,thelensreleaseleveronthecamerabodyplaysnopartatall.

OPEN-APERTUREANDSTOP-DOWNMETERINGLENSES

Open-apertureSMCPentaxlenseshaveadiaphragmcouplinglever

onthebackofthelenswhichcoupleswiththecamerabodytopermitopen-aperturemetering.Theultratelephotosdonothaveadiaphragmcoupler,sotheymustbeusedwiththestop-downmeteringsystem.UseoftheAuto-ExtensionTubeSetKpermitsopen-aperturemetering.

UseofotherKSeriesaccessories-standardExtensionTubeSetK,HelicoidExtensionTubeK,Auto-BellowsKandBellowsUnitK-requiresstop-downmetering.WheneveranyoneoftheseisusedbetweenthecamerabodyandanSMCPentaxlens,thestopdownmeteringsystemmustbeused.

RESISTANCETOTEMPERATUREEXTREMESANDCHANGES

Thetemperaturerangeatwhichyourcamerawillcontinuetofunctionproperlystretchesfrom50°Cto-20°C.However,resistancetocoldcouldbehamperedbyoilwhichhasbecomedirty.Therefore,ifthecameraistooperateatfullefficiencyinverycoldconditions,itmustbeoverhauledandalloilmustbereplaced.Suddenchangesintemperaturewilloftencausemoisturetocondenseinsideoroutsideyourcamera.Thisisapossiblesourceofrust,whichmaybeextremelydamagingtothemechanism.Furthermore,ifthecameragoesfromawarmtemperaturetoasub-freezingone,andiftinydropsofmoisturefreeze,furtherdamagemaybedonebytheirexpansion.

Thus,suddentemperaturechangesshouldbeavoidedasmuchaspossible.Asaguide,atemperaturechangeof10°Cshouldbeallowedtotakeplacegraduallyoveraperiodofatleast30minutes.Ifthisisnotpossible,keepingthecamerainitscaseorbagwillhelpsomewhatinminimizingtheeffectsofarapidtemperaturechange.
