2013.11CATTI三筆實(shí)務(wù)真題(附參考譯文)Section1English-ChineseTranslationStrollthroughthefarmers’marketandyouwillhearaplethoraoflanguagesandseearainbowoffaces.DrivedownCanyonRoadandstopforhalalmeatorFilipinoporkbellyatadjacentmarkets.Alongthehighway,browsetheaislesofagiantAsiansupermarketstockingfreshnapacabbageandmizunaorfreshkimchi.Headtowarddowntownandyou’llseeloncheras—tacotrucks—onstreetcornersandhearSpanishbandamusicOnthecitysnorthernedgeyoucansampleIndianchaat.WelcometoBeaverton,aPortlandsuburbthatishometoOregon’sfastestgrowingimmigrantpopulation.Oncearuralcommunity,Beaverton,population87,000,isnowthesixthlargestcityinonwithimmigrationrateshigherthanthoseofPortlandOregonslargestcityBestknownastheworldheadquartersforathleticshoecompanyNike,Beavertonhaschangeddramaticallyoverthepast40years.SettledbyimmigrantsfromnorthernEuropeinthe19thcentury,todayitisaplacewhere80languagesfromAlbaniantoUrduarespokeninthepublicschoolsandabout30percentofstudentsspeakalanguagebesidesEnglish,accordingtoEnglishasaSecondeiLouBeavertonswaveofnewresidentsbeganarrivinginthe1960s,withKoreansandTejanos(TexansofMexicanorigin),whowerethefirstpermanentLatinos.In1960,Beaverton’spopulationofLatinosandAsianswaslessthan0.3percent.By2000,BeavertonhadproportionatelymoreAsianandicresidentsthanthePortlandmetroareaTodayAsianscomprisepercentandHispanicspercentofBeaverton’spopulation.MayorDennyDoylesaysthatmanyinBeavertonviewtheimmigrantswhoarerapidlyreshapingBeavertonasasourceofenrichment.“Citizenshereespeciallyintheartsandculturecommunitythinkitsfantasticthatwehaveallthesedifferentpossibilitieshere,”hesays.GloriaVargas,50,aSalvadoranimmigrant,ownsapopularsmallrestaurant,Gloria’sSecretCafé,indowntownBeaverton.“IloveBeaverton,”shesays.“IfeellikeIbelonghere.”HermothermovedhertoLosAngelesasateenagerin1973,andshemovedOregonin1979.ShelandedacovetedvendorspotintheBeavertonFarmersMarketin1999.Nowinadditiontorunningherrestaurant,shehasoneofthemostpopularstallsthere,sellingupto200Salvadorantamales—wrappedinbananaleavesratherthancornhusks—eachSaturday.“Oncetheybuymyfood,theyalwayscomebackformore,”shesays.“It’sprettyrelaxedhere,”saysTajSuleyman,28,bornandraisedinLebanon,andrecentlytransplantedtoBeavertontostartajobworkingwithimmigrantsfrommanycountries.HalfMiddleEasternandhalfAfrican,SuleymansayshewasattractedtoBeavertonspecificallybecauseofitssityHeservesonacitysponsoredDiversityTaskForcesetupbyMayorDoyleMohammedHaque,originallyfromBangladesh,findsBeavertonverywelcoming.Hisdaughter,heboasts,wasevenelectedherhighschool’shomecomingqueen.SouthAsianssuchasHaquehavetransformedBethany,aneighborhoodnorthofBeaverton.ItisdensewithimmigrantsfromGujarat,astateinIndiaandprimarysourceforthefirstwaveofouthAsianimmigrantsThefirstwaveofSouthAsianimmigrantstoBeaverton,mostlyGujaratisfromIndia,arrivedinthe1960sand1970s,whenthemotelandhotelindustrywasbooming.ManyboughtsmallhotelsandoriginallysettledinPortland,andthenrelocatedtoBeavertonforbetterschoolsandbiggeryards.ThesecondwaveofSouthAsiansarrivedduringthehigh-techboomofthe1980s,whenthesoftwarelandTektronixreallytookoffManyofBeaverton’sAsiansconvergeatUwajimaya,a30,000-square-footsupermarketnearcentralBeaverton.BernieCapell,formerspecialeventscoordinatoratUwajimaya,saysthatmanycometoshopforfreshproduceeveryday.ButthebiggestgroupofshoppersatUwajimaya,sheadds,areCaucasians.Beaverton’sAsianpopulationboastsasizablenumberofKoreans,whobegantoarriveinthelatesandearly0s.AccordingtoTedChung,anativeofKoreaandBeavertonresidentsince1978,threethingsstandoutabouthisfellowKoreanimmigrants.UponmovingtoBeaverton,theyjoinaChristianchurch—oftenMethodistorPresbyterian—asagatheringplace;theypushtheirchildrentoexcelinschool;andtheyshunthespotlight.ChungsaysheandhisfellowKoreanémigrésworkhardassmallbusinessmen—owninggroceries,drycleaners,laundromats,delis,andsushishops—andarefrugalsotheycansendtheirchildrentoinguniversityMostrecently,immigrantsfromCentralandSouthAmerica,aswellasrefugeesfromIraqandejoinedtheBeavertoncommunityManyBeavertonorganizationshelpimmigrants.TheBeavertonResourceCenterhelpsallimmigrantswithhealthandliteracyservices.TheSomaliFamilyEducationCenterhelpsSomalisandotherAfricanrefugeestogetsettled.AndoneBeavertonelementaryschoolevencameupwiththeideaofa“sewin”—parentsofstudentssewingtogether—towelcomeSomaliBantuparentsandbridgemajorculturaldifferences.Historicallywhitechurches,suchasBeavertonFirstUnitedMethodistChurch,offerimmigrationministriesAndBeavertonchurchesofalldenominationshostKoreanorSpanishlanguageservicesBeaverton’sMayorDoylewantsrefugeeandimmigrantleaderstoparticipateinthetown’sdecisionmakingHesetupaDiversityTaskForcewhosemissionistobuildinclusiveandequitablecommunitiesintheCityofBeaverton.”ThetaskforceisworkingtocreateamulticulturalcommunitycenterforBeavertoniansofallbackgrounds.TheresourcesandwarmwelcomethatBeavertongivesimmigrantsarereciprocatedintheaffectionthatmanyexpressfortheirnewhome.KaltunCaynan,aSomaliwomanwhocametoBeavertonin2001fleeingcivilwar,isanoutreachcoordinatorfortheSomaliFamilyEducationCenter.“Ilikei
