aspecialconcerttoshowthatjazzwasseriousmusic.Gershwin
agreedtocomposesomethingfortheconcertbeforeherealizedhe
hadjustafewweekstodoit.Andinthatshorttime,hecomposed
apieceforpianoandorchestrawhichhecalledRhapsodyinBlue.
Gershwinhimselfplayedthepianoattheconcert.Theaudiencewere
thrilledwhentheyheardhismusic.Itmadehimworld-famousand
showedthatjazzmusiccouldbebothseriousandpopular.In1928,
GershwinwenttoParis.Heappliedtostudycompositionwiththe
well-knownmusicianNadiaBoulanger,butsherejectedhim.Shewas
afraidthatclassicalstudywouldruinhisjazz-influencedstyle.
Whilethere,GershwinwroteAnAmericaninParis.Whenitwasfirst
performed,criticsweredividedoverthemusic.Somecalledithappy
andfulloflife,toothersitwassillyandboring.Butitquickly
becamepopularinEuropeandtheUnitedStates.Itstillremains
oneofhismostfamousworks.
GeorgeGershwindiedin1937,justdaysafterdoctorslearnedhe
hadbraincancer.Hewasonlythirtynineyearsold.Newspapersall
overtheworldreportedhisdeathontheirfrontpages.People
