Anelectronicnoseworksinasimilarfashion.Anarrayofchemicalsensorsisusedtomimictherangeofproteinreceptorsinthehumannose.Eachofthesesensorsismadetoresponddifferentlytodifferentodors.Thesignalsfromthesesensorsareconnectedviaelectronicstoamicroprocessororcomputer.Theelectronicsreplacestheneuronsintheolfactorylimbicsystemandthecomputerormicroprocessoractsasthebrain.Thesignalsthatgetsenttothecomputercanbeinterpretedusingspecialpatternrecognitionsoftware.

Deodorants,soaps,perfumesandwinesareallconsumerproductsdevelopedwiththehelpofhumansensorypanels.Replacingoraugmentingthehumanapproachwithanobjectiveelectronicnoseiscurrentlyunderinvestigation.Thistoolwouldnotonlybeusefulinthedevelopmentofnewproductsbutalsoforqualitycontrolinthemanufacturingenvironment.Manymanufacturingfloorsareequippedwithautomatedvisualinspection.
