CURRICULUMofSTOMATOLOGY
Introduction:
Stomatologyisarequiredcourseforallmedicalstudents.Thecoursecoversoralanatomy&physiology,endodontics,periodontics,oralmedicine,oral&maxillofacialsurgery,prosthodonticsandorthodontics,andiscriticaltotheunderstandingoforalandmaxillofacialhealthandtherelationshipbetweentheregionandtherestofthebody.
Theoralandmaxillofacialregionisanimportantpartofthebody.Inadditiontotheteethandtheirsupportingstructures,therearevarioustypesofsoftandhardtissues.Theregionisthesiteofmanycommondisordersthathaveseriousconsequencesandmayaffectotherpartsofthebody.Therefore,medicalstudentsshouldpossessknowledgeaboutthisspecialty.Thecoursesyllabusoutlinesspecificrequirementsonthecontentstobecoveredandlearningobjectives.Asidefromlectures,studentsareencouragedtovisittheclinicstofamiliarizethemselveswithcommondiseasesandtreatmentapproaches.Bydoingso,theywillachieveacomprehensiveunderstandingaboutthisdiscipline.
Goal:
Theoverallgoalsforthiscourseareconsistentwiththosesetbythemedicalcollegeandareintendedtohelpstudentsestablishaknowledgebasesothattheycanservetheirpatientswellintheirfuturecareers.
Objectives:
1.Knowledge
Attheendofthecourse,thestudentshouldbeableto:
(1)describebasictoothstructures;
(2)befamiliarwiththeroledentalplaqueplaysinthedevelopmentofdentalcariesandperiodontaldisease;
(3)befamiliarwiththeetiologyandclassificationofdentalcariesanditsdiagnosisandmanagement;
(4)understandtheetiologyandpathogenesisofperiodontaldisease,theclassificationandclinicalmanifestationsofperiodontaldisease,anditsdiagnosis,treatmentandprevention;
(5)beknowledgeableaboutthetypesofdisordersandtreatmentapproachesoralandmaxillofacialsurgeryisinvolved;
(6)understandtheclassificationofedentulismandprosthodonticmethods;
(7)befamiliarwiththetypesofmalocclusionandtreatmentmethods.
2.Skills
Attheendofthecourse,thestudentshouldbeableto:
(1) correctlydiagnosedentalcariesandproposetreatmentoptions;
(2)estimatewhetherdentallesionshavereachthepulportheperiapicalregion;
(3)identifythetypesofperiodontalinflammationandrecommendoralhygienemethods;
(4)recognizecommonoralmucosadisorders,suchasrecurrentaphthousulcers,lichenplanus,etc.;
(5)assesstoothmobilityandtheneedforextraction;
(6)determinethenatureofmaxillofacialpresentations,suchastrauma,tumorandmalformation;
(7)explaintheprosandconsofremovableandfixedpartialdentures;
(8)differentiatebetweendifferenttypesofmalocclusion.
3.Integration
Developthecapabilitiesofapplyingacquiredknowledgetocasemanagement,forexample,providingcomprehensiveassessmentofapatient’soralhealthstatusandtreatmentneeds..

Examination:
1.Objectives
Evaluationisanessentialpartoftheeducationprocess.Thereshouldberegularinternalevaluations.Thestudentsshouldbeevaluatedinall3domains–cognitive,affectiveandpsychomotorabilities.Theprinciplesofinternalevaluationsshouldbeuniformlyappliedbyallmedicalcolleges.Thepurposeofevaluationshouldbe:
(1)togivefeedbacktothestudentsabouttheirunderstandingofthecoursematerial.Thispurposecanbeachieved
byregularinternalevaluationofeachassignmentorcourse.
(2)tocertifythatthestudentshavesuccessfullycompletedthetrainingandhaveachievedtheobjectivesofthe
educationalprogram.
(3)todeterminethesuccessoftheteachingprogram.
(4)inordertoachievetheobjectivesitismandatorytoadoptthefollowingprocessestomotivateandencouragestudentstodirecttheirownlearning.
