its

out
the
extract,she
found
asubstance
thatawardedtoTuYouyou(co-winner).whoseresearchledtothediscovery
of
artemisinin,a
crucial
new
treatment
for
malaria.Artemisinin
has
saved
hundreds
of
thousands
of
lives,andhas
led
to
improved
health
for
millions
of
people.Over200millionpeople
around
theworld
get
malaria
each
year,andabout600,000die
from
it.Artemisinin
has
become
a
vital
partof
the
treatment
for
malaria,and
is
thought
to
save
100.000
lives
aYearin
Africa
alone.than
190timesthe
team
finallysucceeded
in
1971.members
even
insisted
on
testing
the
medicine
on

it
was
safe.Later,the
medicine
was
tested
onwhom
recovered.This
medicine,whichwascalled/

formalaria1955.After
she
graduated,she
worked
at
the
China
Academy
of
TraditionalChinese
Medicine
in
Beijing.In1967,the
Chinese
government
formed
a
teamofscientists
with

objective
of
discovering
a
new
treatment
for
malaria,andTu
Youyou
was
among
the
first
researchers
chosen.In
the
beginning.Tu
Youyouwent
to
Hainan,where
malaria
was
more
common,to
study
malaria
patients.In1969.she
became
the
head
of
the
project
in
Beijing.and
decided
to
reviewRead
for
