Ifyou’reageneralphysician,andyouhaveawidebreadthofmedicalknowledge,youshouldn’tbeafraidtoidentifyyourselfanddosomethingtohelp.Ifyou’reaspecialistwithanarrowscopeofknowledge,youmightnotbeabletogiveasmuchhelp.Ifyoudo,though,justassessthesituation.Ifit’snotserious,telltheflightattendantthatthisisoutofyourscopeofpracticeandaskhimorhertocallforanothervolunteer.Ifit’sseriousandyoudon’tfeelcomfortableadministeringcare,encouragetheflightattendanttoaskforanyoneelsewithmedicaltraining.There’salmostalwaysawillingparamedic,nurse,orEagleScoutreadytohelp.Infact,mostflightattendantshavetraininginfirstaid,CPR,andAEDuse,soyoucanletthemusetheirtrainingtocareforthepassengerwhileyouencourageandassist.Thetypicalmedicalsuppliesyou’llworkwithThelargeU.S.commercialairlinesshouldhaveafirstaidkitandanAED.Thatmeansyou’llmostlikelyhavebasicfirstaidsuppliesplusastethoscope,bloodpressurecuff,abagvalvemask,aspirin,dextrose,atropine,lidocaine,saline,albuterolinhalers,injectableepinephrine,anoralantihistamine,anIVcatheter,IVantihistamines,anIVdripset,andseveralsyringes.2
