The house which forms the architectural core of the present palace. Buckingham Palace
2、is a symbol and home of the British monarchy, an art gallery and tourist attraction. The palace also houses the offices of theRoyal Householdand is the workplace of 450 people,Buckingham Palace, is the official residence and office of theBritish monarch. Thepalaceis a setting for state occasions and

It has been a focus for the British people at times of national rejoicing and crisis.,Originally known it was a large townhousebuilt for theDuke of Buckinghamin 1705 on a site which had been in private ownership for at least 150 years. It was subsequently acquired byGeorge IIIin
4、1761as a private residence forQueen Charlotte, and known as The Queens House.,Buckingham Palace finally became the official royal palace of the British monarch on the accession ofQueen Victoriain 1837. The last major structural additions were made in the late 19th and early 20th centuries .,Queen Vi

The proximity of the harbor and its location in the direction of th
8、e sea required for the bridge to allow the passage of large vessels. So the decision to create a moveable bridge which can be opened to accommodate boat traffic was made. The mechanism to open the bridge is hidden in the two towers.,Each deck is more than 30 meters wide and can be opened to an angle
9、 of 83 degrees. When opened the bridge has a clearance of almost 45 meters. It used to open almost 50 times a day but nowadays it is only raised about 1,000 times a year. Bridge lifts are pre-scheduled (for cruise ships, etc) so visitors can check the bridges website to find out when it will rise an
10、d lower.,Inside the bridge is the Tower Bridge Exhibition, a display area that encompasses the walkway and the two famous towers where you can observe the Victorian engine room. 13、emy aircraft from using it to hone in on the Houses of Parliament, and duringWorld War IIits clock was not illuminated for the same reason. In 1934 and 1956 the bell was restored and repaired.
