Whatdothepeoplebelievein?4Today,IchoosetotakeanAmericancultureapproachtoourdiscussion,focusingonthetraditionalmainstreamvalues(美國(guó)社會(huì)主流價(jià)值觀)thathaveattractedimmigrantstotheUnitedStatesforover200years.Afterexplaininghowthesetraditionalvaluesdeveloped,wewilltracehowtheyaffectvariousaspectsofAmericanlife.ThisinformationwillhelpusgetacompositepictureofAmericanbeliefsandpracticesastheyrelatetoeducation,business,government,sports,recreation,andsoon.
Today,IchoosetotakeanAme5Ihopetheintroductioncanhelpusbecomemoresensitivetoculturaldifferences.However,myintroductionisnottopersuadeChinesepeopletoacceptAmericanway,butrathertohelpunderstanditmorefullyandcomparewithours.Andseewhatwecanlearnfromeachother.
Ihopetheintroductioncanhe6TherearesixmainstreamvaluesofAmericansociety:1.IndividualFreedom(個(gè)人自由);2.Self-Reliance(自力更生);3.EqualityofOpportunity

Therearesixmainstreamvalue7Thesevaluesoriginatedfrom“TheDeclarationofIndependence”(獨(dú)立宣言),peoplewillneverforgetitssaying:Weholdthesetruthstobeself-evident,thatallmenarecreatedequal,thattheyareendowedbytheirCreatorwithcertaininalienable(不能剝奪的)rights,thatamongtheseareLife,LibertyandthepursuitofHappiness.Thesevaluesoriginatedfrom“8Let’shaveafurtherlookintothesesixvalues.Historically,theUnitedStateshasbeenviewedas“thelandofopportunity”,attractingimmigrantsfromallovertheworld.TheimmigrantsbelievedthattheywouldfindopportunitiesinAmericawiththissetofvalues.
Let’shaveafurtherlookinto9Threeofthem--IndividualFreedom,EqualityofOpportunity,andMaterialWealth–representtraditionalreasonswhyimmigrantshavebeendrawntoAmerica.Inordertoachievethesebenefits,however,therewerepricestobepaid:Self-Reliance,Competition,andHardWork.Byandby,thesesixbasicvaluesbecometraditionalvaluesystem.
Threeofthem--IndividualFr10IndividualFreedomandSelf-RelianceTheearliestsettlerscametotheNorthAmericancontinenttoestablishcoloniesthatwerefreefromthecontrolsthatexistedinEuropeansocieties.Theywantedtoescapetocontrolsplacedontheirlivesbykingsandgovernments,priests(牧師)andchurches,noblemenandaristocrats(貴族).
IndividualFreedomandSelf-Re11Toagreatextent,theysucceeded.In1789,whentheywrotetheConstitutionfortheirnewnation,theyseparatedthose“privilegedclass”(特權(quán)階層)mentionedabovefromthegovernmenttoensurethatanaristocraticsocietywouldnotdevelop.Therewouldbenorulingclassofnobilityinthenewnation.
Toagreatextent,theysuccee12ThewordfreedomisoneofthemostrespectedpopularwordsintheUnitedStatestoday.Byfreedom,Americansmeanthedesireandtheabilityofallindividualstocontroltheirowndestiny(命運(yùn))withoutoutsideinterferencefromthegovernment,arulingnobleclass,thechurch,oranyotherorganizedauthority.Thewordfreedomisoneofthe13Thereis,however,apricetobepaidforthisindividualfreedom:self-reliance.Individualsmustlearntorelyonthemselvesorrisklosingfreedom.Thismeansachievingbothfinancialandemotionalindependencefromtheirparentsasearlyaspossible,usuallybyage18or21.ItmeansthatAmericansbelievetheyshouldtakecareofthemselves,solvetheirownproblems,and“standontheirowntwofeet”.Thereis,however,apriceto14Thisstrongbeliefinself-reliancecontinuestodayasatraditionalbasicAmericanvalue.MostAmericansbelievethattheymustbeself-reliantinordertokeeptheirfreedom.Iftheyrelytoomuchonthesupportoftheirfamiliesorthegovernmentoranyorganization,theymaylosesomeoftheirfreedomtodowhattheywant.
Thisstrongbeliefinself-rel15EqualityofOpportunityandCompetitionBecauseofthebeliefthateveryonehasachancetosucceedinAmerica,generationsofimmigrants,fromtheearliestsettlerstothepresentday,havecometotheUnitedStateswiththisexpectation.BecausetitlesofnobilitywereforbiddenintheConstitution,noformalclasssystemdevelopedintheUnitedStates.
EqualityofOpportunityandCo16Thehopesanddreamsofmanyoftheimmigrantswerefulfilledintheirnewcountry.Thelowersocialclassintowhichmanywereborndidnotpreventthemfromtryingtorisetoahighersocialposition.Americansseemuchoflifeasarace(比賽)forsuccess.Forthem,equalitymeansthateveryoneshouldhaveanequalchancetoentertheraceandwin.Thehopesanddreamsofmanyo17Ithelpsensurethattheraceforsuccessisafaironeandthatapersondoesnotwinjustbecauseheorshewasbornintoawealthyfamily,orlosebecauseofreligion.ThisAmericanconceptof“fairplay”isanimportantaspectofthebeliefinequalityofopportunity.

PeoplerealizethatChinashou34Secondly,wecannotavoidonefactwhenwelearnforeignlanguages--wearelearningdifferentculturewhichismuchmoreimportantthanthelanguageitself.Secondly,wecannotavoidone35Whatdowereallylearnwhenwestudyaboutothercultures?Firstandforemost,welearnaboutourown.Untilweareconfrontedbyadifferentwayofdoingthings,weassumethateveryonedoesthingsthesamewaythatwedo,andthusourownculture–ourvalues,attitudes,behavior--islargelyhiddenfromourview.
