ForewordForewordfromSeniorDirectoroftderGroup,CarenGrown,andDirectoroftheDevelopmentDataGroup,HaishanFuAttheWorldBankGroup,werecognizethepivotalrolegenderequalityplaysinsustainabledevelopment.Improvinglivingstandards,reducingpoverty,andbuildingresilienceallrequiredatatofacilitateevidence-basedpolicydecisions.Makingprogresstowardsgenderequalityisnoexception.TheLittleDataBookonGender2019illustratestheprogresstowardsgenderequalityfor217economiesaroundtheworld.Itprovidescomparablestatisticsforwomenandmenfortheyears2000and2017acrossarangeofindicatorscoveringeducation,healthandrelatedservices,economicstructure,participationandaccesstoresources,publiclifeanddecisionmaking,andagency,enablingreaderstoreadilycompareeconomies.Thiseditionalsofeaturesonlinecountrytables—tobeupdatedquarterly—makingiteasierthanevertoseehowwomenandmenarefaringacrossarangeofglobalindicatorsandtotrackprogressovertime.Thedatarevealremarkableprogressinrecentdecadestowardsgenderequality,notablyineducationandhealth.Themostrecentdatashowglobalprimaryschoolcompletionratesat91percentforboysand90percentforgirls,withlowersecondarycompletionratesat76percentforboysand77percentforgirls.Gains,however,havebeendistributedunequallybetweenricherandpoorercountries.Gendergapstothedetrimentofgirlsemergeinlow-incomecountries,mostlyinSub-SaharanAfrica,whileinsomeLatinAmericancountries,boysarelesslikelythangirlstocompleteprimaryandsecondaryschool.Bothwomen’sandmen’slifespanshaveshownmarkedglobalimprovements:forwomen,theincreasewasfrom70yearsin2000to74in2017,comparedtoanincreasefrom66to70yearsformen.Ineverycountryintheworld,womenoutlivemen.Increasesinfemalelifeexpectancyhavebeendriveninpartbyadeclineintheriskofmortalityduringchildbirth.Globally,therewereanestimated303,000maternaldeathsin2015,adeclineof31percentfrom200.Nonetheless,maternalmortalityremainshighinSub-SaharanAfrica,wheretheratestoodat547per100,000livebirthsin2015.Notwithstandingrelativelylargegainsineducationandhealth,genderinequalityinaccesstoeconomicopportunitieshasremainedstubbornlypersistent.Onvirtuallyeveryglobalmeasure,womenaremoreeconomicallyexcludedthanmen.Womenaremorelikelythanmentobeengagedinlowproductivityactivities,workmoreininformalemployment,andtransitionmorefrequentlybetweenbeinginemploymentandoutofthelaborforce.Globally,women’slaborforceparticipationhasnotincreased.Infact,itdecreasedfrom51percentin2000to48percentin2018.Intermsofaccesstofinance,accountownershipoverallcontinuestoexpandbutgenderinequalitiespersist.While71percentofmenhaveanaccountatafinancialinstitution,64percentofwomendo.Thisgapof7percentagepointswasalsopresentin2014and2011.Inlowandmiddleincomeeconomies,thegendergapremainsat8percentagepoints.Thesedataillustratesignificantstoriesofprogressandchallengesstilltosolve.YetTheLittleDataBookonGenderisonlyanentrypointtotherichsetofstatisticsthattrackgenderequality.Therefore,weencouragereaderstoexplorethefuller,curateddataandanalysistoolsontheWorldBank’sGenderDataPgende.vTheLittleDataBookonGender2019Datanotes
