Asthepriceofhighereducationcontinuestorisethroughashakyeconomicrecovery,fewerAmericansareconsideringcollegeagoodinvestment,especiallycomparedtootherneedsforsavings.

Inasurveyof3,000people,63.5%saidacollegeeducationisstillagoodfinancialinvestmentforyoungadultsgivenrisingcosts,comparedto79.1%lastyearand80.9%in2022.Thedecliningsentimentisreflectedacrossallagegroups-63.5%ofthoseaged18-29saidcollegeisagoodinvestment,comparedto76.7%lastyear.Just61.5%ofthoseover65yearsoldsaiditisagoodinvestment-82.1%saidthesamein2022.

AseparatestudyreleasedlastmonthbyPayscale,anonlinesalaryandcompensationinformationcompany,ranked852institutionsacrossthecountrybythecollegesreturnsoninvestmentover30years.

TheJulyprioritiessurvey,releasedTuesdaybyfinancialservicesgroupCOUNTRYFinancial,showsashiftinsavingprioritiesthroughanuncertaineconomy.

MostAmericans-42.8%-saidthisyearthatsavingfortheirownretirementwasmoreimportantthansavingfortheirchildscollegeeducation,indicatinganincreasefromlastyears40.7%.Consequently,theproportionofthosewhoprioritizedsavingfortheirchildseducationdecreased-to40.7%thisyearfrom47%lastyear.Thisyear,16.5%saidtheywerenotsure,markingthegreatestuncertaintyoverthelastfouryears.

ItsunderstandablewhyAmericansarequestioninghowtoprioritizecollegeeducationandretirementfunding,particularlywiththeskyrocketingcostsinbothareas.Butwithgraduateslikelytoearn$1millionmoreintheirlifetimethannon-grads,collegeremainsanimportantinvestmentinafamilysfuturedespitetherisingpricetag,saidKeithBrannan,vicepresidentofFinancialSecurityPlanningforCOUNTRYFinancial.Thegoodnews,however,isthatpeopleareputtingtheirretirementsavingsfirst.Youcanalwaysborrowtopayforcollege,butyoucantborrowforretirement.Withtheproperplanning,Americanscanachievetheirfinancialgoalsforboth.

Thisyearsproportionofthosewhoprioritizeretirementsavings,however,isinlinewiththe43%surveyedin2022.Therewasleastuncertaintyin2022,and47.1%prioritizedsavingfortheirownretirement,thegreatestproportionoverthelastfouryears.

Whereasthoseinthelower-incomebrackettendedtosavefortheirchildseducationovertheirownretirement-53.2%versus23.8%forpeoplemakinglessthan$20,000-thoseontheotherendwhomakemorethan$100,000ayearerredtowardprioritizingretirementsavings-38%saidsavingfortheirchildseducationwasmoreimportant,52.5%prioritizedretirement.

Almost31%ofthosesurveyedtookoutloanstopayforcollege,and64.3%ofthosewhoborrowedhavepaidthemoff.Ofthosewhotookoutloans,abouthalfsaidtheirloanshadlittletonoimpactonlifedecisionslikegettingmarried,buyingahomeorsavingforretirement.

Butyoungerrespondentsreflectedgreaterloanburdens.Ofthe18-29year-oldswhotookoutloans,40%saideducationloanshavesignificantlyimpactedtheirlifedecisions,37.7%havebeensomewhatimpacted,and14.4%havebeenaffected,butnotmuch.Just7.9%saidloanshavenotaffectedtheirdecisionsatall.

YoungerAmericans,however,werealsomostlikelytosayparentsshouldnthavetopayforanycollegecostsfortheirchildren.Ofthoseages18-29,15.2%saidstudentsshouldbetheonestopayfortheirowneducation.Acrossallagegroups,morethanhalfoftherespondentssaidparentsandchildrenshouldsharehighereducationcosts.
