TheexecutivemansionwastorchedbyBritishtroopsin1814,duringtheWarof1812.Thestructuraldamagecausedbythefirewasrepairedbuttheexteriorsandstonewallswerestillblackwithfiredamage.Thewallswerethenpaintedwhite,givingbirthtothenicknameTheWhiteHouse.AnactofCongressmadethistheofficialnamein1902.

EveryPresidenthaslefthismarkupontheWhiteHouse.ThomasJeffersonaddedterracestotheeastandwestwings,AndrewJacksoninstalledrunningwater,andHarryTrumanaddedaporch.BillClintonsadditiontotheWhiteHousewasanindoor-runningtrack(Usedtorelievetensionandcheeseburgers).
