3.Thereisnotjustonebigpublicwhoseopinionacompanyhastoworryaboutifitistosurviveandgrow.Onlyafeworganisations,suchasanationalgovernment,aresolargethatallthepublichassomeopinionabouttheiractions.Mostcompaniesandorganisationshavetothinkabouttheopinionsofsmallergroups--theircustomers,forinstance,ortheirworkersortheirshareholders.Acompanymustalsohavethetrustandgoodwillofitsneighboursintheplaceswhereithasfactoriesandoffices.Thecompanymustbeongoodtermswiththegovernment,becauseeverybusinesscanbeseriouslyaffectedbygovernmentlawsorregulations.
4.Gainingtheconfidenceofothersrequires,firstofall,thoughtfulnessaboutotherpeople'sbeliefs,interests,andfeelings.Publicrelationsbeginsbyplanningone'sactionssoastorespecttherightsandbeliefsofotherpeople.Unlessapublicrelationsprogramtakesthesethingsintoaccount,itcandolittletohelpacompany.Notallthemoneyintheworld,northemostskilfulwritersorspeakers,canmakeacompanylookasifitcaresaboutotherpeopleifthecompanyreallydoesnotcare.Mostcompanies,therefore,considerhowanyaction,suchasmovingtoanewlocationorbuyinganotherbusiness,willaffectpublicopinion.Havingmadeadecision,thecompanywantseveryonetounderstandthedecisionandthereasonsitwasmade.
5.Mostlargecompanieshaveapublicrelationsdepartment,whichtellsthepublicaboutthecompany'splansandactivities.Thedepartmentismadeupofwriters,editors,photographicandpictureexperts,andresearchers.
