Immersedintheacademicatmosphereofanintellectualfamily,Iwasencouragedinmyearlychildhoodbymyparentstoreadbooksinawiderangeofdisciplines.Withthisprivilegedbackground,Iattendedprimaryschoolat6,atleastoneyearearlierthanthenormaladmissionageof7orolder.Ifeltsolucky-Godblessedmewithsomanynaturalgifts.AtanearlyageIshowedanaturaltalentinmathematicsandastrongmemory,theattributesthatenabledmetoexcelmyclassmates,especiallyinsuchchallengingsubjectsasmathematics,physicsandchemistry.Itookpartinavarietyofprovincialandnationalcontests,demonstratingmyexcellentacademicskillsandwiningmanyprizes.

Blessedwithmyacademicpotence,Iwasabletofinishmyprimaryandsecondaryeducationin10years,twoyearsaheadoftheusualtwelveyears.At16,IenteredaprivilegedclassspeciallydesignedforthegiftedstudentsatJilinUniversity,acradleofscientificandtechnologicaltalentsinChina.Theclassselectsonly90studentsoutofmorethan1000childprodigiesacrossChinaeachyear.(JilinUniversityisaprestigiousuniversityofgeneraleducationwith20departmentsandaregularannualenrollmentof1,500students)IstudiedatElectricalEngineering(E.E)Department,ahighlyselectivedepartmentwithagatheringofsmartstudentswhoarehardtocompetewith.

Fouryearsofundergraduatestudieshadmewelltrainedinawiderangeofdisciplines,andmyoutstandingacademicperformanceencouragedmetopursueanadvanceddegree.Withaconcentrationonmathematics,communicationandcomputer,Istudiedavarietyofcoursesinmyundergraduateyears,amongwhichwereHigherMathematics,ProbabilityStatisticsandStochasticProcess,TheoriesofSignalandInformation,HighFrequencyCircuitsandPrinciplesofModernCommunicationsSystems,ComputerPrincipleandothercoursesintheElectronicTechnologyfield.IalsostudiedWesternculture,HistoryandEconomicsinordertobuildupagoodbaseformyeducation.Withawishtobuildasolidfoundationformyfutureresearchandstudy,Iwasfullydevotedtomyacademictrainingatcollege.Myhardworkprovedtobesuccessful.MyoverallGPAof3.57/4.0rankedinthetoponepercentofmyclass.Upongraduationin1994,IwoneasyacceptanceintoBeijingUniversityofPostsandTelecommunicationsasagraduatestudentat20,anagewhenmostChinesestudentswouldbejuststartingtheiruniversityeducation.Atthisuniversity,Inarrowedmyacademicinterestdowntotheareaofmobilecommunicationsanddigitalcommunications.

MyMAeducationprovedtobeanotherperiodoffruitfulandsuccessfulacademicpursuits.AmongthecoursesIselectedwereProbabilityTheory,ISDN&ATM,SPC,DigitalSignalProcessing,PersonalCommunications,C++language.Thesedisciplinarytrainingpreparedmetodelvedeeperinthestudyofelectricalengineeringandcommunications.TokeepmeinformedofthelatestdevelopmentsinmyfieldandtobrushupmyEnglishlanguageskills,Ialsoreadthelatestprofessionaljournalsandperiodicalsofthetelecommunicationsonaregularbasis.BurningthecourseofmyMAprogram,myoutstandingacademicrecordswonmevariousscholarshipsinsevenconsecutiveyears,amongwhich,tonameafew,wereExcellentStudents,ExcellentPerson,Excellentfellowship.

Togarnishthiswritingwithotherpersonalactivitiesotherthanacademicachievements,IneedtomentionmyperfectperformanceinadancingcontestatJilinUniversity,whichwonmethefirstprize.

Anyway,lookingbackatmycampuslife,IfeelconfidenttosaythatIhavefulfilledtheeducationgoaltomysatisfaction.

TeachingExperienceIworkedasateachingassistantattheElectronicsCircuitGroupinPersonalCommunicationsinmythirdsemesteratBeijingUniversityofPostsandTelecommunications.ItaughtproductapplicationsandthetelecommunicationsdevelopmentinChina.Itrainedthestudentsbytheoreticalapproachandalsotaughtthemhowtosolverealproblemsbypracticalmeans.Ifoundtheteachingpositionsomuchenjoyable.Thedailyacademicexchangesbetweenthestudentsandmyselfwerebeneficialtobothparties.Ibelievethatmystudentsenjoyedmyteachingtoobecausemyclasseswerewellattended.

StartingfromApril1998,Iworkedasapart-timeteacheratHPcorporation.LaterIwasalsoemployedbySoftwareCenterMotorola,China.ItaughtMotorolacustomerstheprincipleofCDMA(CodeDivisionMultipleAccess)andtheusageoftheHPinstrumentsfortestingCDMABasestationandCDMAHandset.Motorolacustomerswereallsatisfiedwithmyteaching.Inotonlygraspedadvancedknowledgebutalso,moreimportantly,learnedhowtobeagoodteacher.

ResearchExperienceInthesecondyearofmygraduatestudies,IbegantoworkasresearchassistantofProfessorDachengYang,arenownedexpertindigitalandmobilecommunicationResearchandDesignCenterofMinistryofPostsandTelecommunications.Afterlearningthebackground,application,principle,andadvantageofCDMA,IselectedthesignalingdesignoftheCDMABaseStationInterfaceasmyresearchtopic.IevaluatedandstudiedtheprotocolsIS-95,IS-634andtheULTRAinterfaceprotocolsofLucent.ApplyingsoftwareengineeringmethodandOriented-Objectapproach,IdesignedtheinternalinterfaceofBaseStationSystembetweenBSCandBTS-Abisinterface,whichisoneofthemostimportantpartsofsuchalargeandsophisticatedproject.ThenreferringtoprotocolsLAPD/LAPF,integratingthelatestknowledgeandusingonestep.Byworkingonthisproject,IlearnedmoreaboutCDMA,GSMandothermobilecommunicationssystems.LaterIfeltsoproudtohearwhatIhaddonewasdownloadedtotheboardandthedesignranflawlessly.

WorkingExperienceAfterIobtainedmyMAdegreeinengineeringin1997,IwasemployedbyatelecommunicationbranchcompanyofPosts&TelecommunicationsIndustryCompany.IparticipatedintheJSU18switchingSystemProject,whichisplannedtoproducethesixthlargestswitchingsysteminChina'sownswitchingsystems.IwasinchargeoftheNo.7signalingsectionanddevelopedthetrunkcommunicationsystem.ReferringtoprotocolQ.764,etc,IdesignedtheTUP(TelephoneUserPart)&ISUP(ISDNUserPart)-themostimportantpartofaswitchingsystem-withC++Language.Bynow,IhavefinishedthesoftwareflowofCPC(callprocess)ofthesetwoparts.Throughprogramming,downloadingtheprocedureintotherealswitchingsystem,debuggingandtesting,Icametodeeplyunderstandthecallprocessofthelargeswitchingsystemandtherelationshipbetweenallthemodulesofalargeswitchingsystem.TheprocedurethatIcompletedissogoodthatwecancallsuccessfullythroughit.

Inworkingonthesetwoprojects,Icultivateddiligentworkhabits,independentresearchabilityandteamspirit.IfeelIhavethepotentialforfurtherfurtheracademicgrowthandamreadytotakeupthechallengeofadvancedstudiesinmychosenfield.

FromAugust1998,IjoinedSoftwarecenterMotorola,ChinaandgotinvolvedintheCDMAproject.WemustcommunicatewithinternationalcustomersonafrequentbasisinEnglishenvironment.SoInotonlylearnedabouttheexcellentsoftwaredevelopmentprocessandvariousbranchesofadvancedknowledge,butalsoimprovedmyEnglishability.Here,weoftenexchangeourfindingsatpresentationsgivenbyothersandmyselfinEnglish.Igetalotoftechnicalandnon-technicaltraining,insuchsubjectsasSoftwareProductProcess,CDMA(CodeDivisionMultipleAccess),GSM,GPRS(GeneralPacketRadioService-thethirdgenerationsystemofGSM),TTCN(TreeandTabularCombinedNotation-atestlanguage),ITEX(InteractiveTTCNEditorandexecutor-atesttoolfortheTTCNlanguage),andevenEnglishlanguage.

PurposeofStudyIlearngreedily,butthemoreIamtrained,themoredeeplyIrealizewhatIlearnedearlierisnotenough.Ihavenotgotachancetoleadamajorproject,althoughIhavebeenmovingonasmoothcareerpathandalwaysfinishedmypartofeveryprojectimmaculately.Asafemaleengineer,Imustlearnmoretocompetewithmostmaleengineerstoleadamajorproject.Andinspiteofallmyachievements,IfeelthatIhavenotbroughtmyintellectualcapabilitiesintofullplay.SoIdesiretoenteryouresteemeduniversitytopursueadvancedstudiessothatIcanlayasolidfoundationformyfutureresearchwork.Inthemeantime,IwillbeabletoimprovemyEnglish,andIhopethatsomedayIcanspeakEnglishaswellasChinese.

IbelieveIhaveacquiredthenecessarytheoreticalframeworkandpracticalexperienceforadvancedstudies.Equippedwiththeabilitytoteachmyselfandconductindependentresearch,IwillbeabletoattaincompetencequicklyinareasthatImayatfirstknowverylittleabout.Ineverworkjusttofinishanassignment,butinsteadIalwaystryconscientiouslytolearnasmuchaspossibleandsharpenmyexpertisethroughtheworkIdo.Keepingthisworkstyle,Ihavebecomehighlyskilledinsuchfieldsasswitchingsystem'strunkingsystem(communicationsandsoftware),CodeDivisionMultipleAccesssystem(mobilecommunicationsandsoftware),SDT&TTCN(CASEandtesttools),andpSOS+system(real-timeoperationsystem).Theseachievementswouldbeagreathelpinmypursuitofadvancededucation,especiallywhenIcanworkundertheseasonedguidanceofyourstrongfaculty.MypreviousexperiencewillqualifymefortheTAandRApositionsofyouruniversityaswell.

IwouldliketoapplytodograduatestudiesintheUnitedStateswheretheresearchandeducationinglobaltelecommunicationsareleadingtheworld.Ihavelongadmiredyouresteemeduniversityknownforitsdemandingworkethicsandnurturingacademicatmosphere.IamconfidentthatIcanreceiveahighqualityeducationonyourPhDprogram.IfIamaccepted,IamalsoconfidentthatIcanmakequickprogressintheE.Efield,especiallyintheareasofwirelesscommunication,communication,digitalsignalprocessing,thedisciplinesthatsharemanycommoncharacteristicsandimportantprinciples.Giventhebroadapplicationsofthesetechnologies,Ibelievetheprogresswemakeintheseareaswillhelpshapethefutureofthemankind.Iwouldliketobeattheforefrontofsuchprogress.AsIamwelltrainedandbroadlyexperiencedinEEandcomputerscience,youmayfindmemorethanqualifiedforadvancedstudiesinareasotherthanthoseIhavementioned.Ifso,Iwouldbegratefultoyourappreciationandwouldliketohearanyadvicethatyoumayhaveforme.Uponcompletionoftheprogram,IwillreturntomyhomelandandstrivetomakescientificcontributionsthatbothyouruniversityandIcanbeproudof.
