Ithadlittletodowithinnatemodesty,Krugersaid,butratherwithacentralparadox:Incompetentslackthebasicskillstoevaluatetheirperformancerealistically.Oncetheygetthoseskills,theyknowwheretheystand,evenifthatisatthebottom.

AmericansandWesternEuropeansespeciallyhadanunrealisticallysunnyassessmentoftheirowncapabilities,Dunningsaidbytelephoneinaseparateinterview,whileJapaneseandKoreanstendedtogiveareasonableassessmentoftheirperformance.Incertainareas,suchasathleticperformance,whichcanbeeasilyquantified,thereislessself-delusion,theresearcherssaid.Buteveninsomecasesinwhichthefailureshouldseemobvious,theperpetratorisblithelyunawareoftheproblem.

Thiswasespeciallytreeintheareaoflogicalreasoning,whereresearchsubjects—studentsatCornellUniversity,wherethetworesearcherswerebased—oftenratedthemselveshighlyevenwhentheyflubbedallquestionsinareasoningtest.

Later,whenthestudentswereinstructedinlogicalreasoning,theyscoredbetteronatestbutratedthemselveslower,havinglearnedwhatconstitutedcompetenceinthisarea.

Grammarwasanotherareainwhichobjectiveknowledgewashelpfulindeterminingcompetence,butthemoresubjectiveareaofhumorposeddifferentchallenges,theresearcherssaid.

Participantswereaskedtoratehowfunnycertainjokeswere,andcomparetheirresponseswithwhatanexpertpanelofcomediansthought.Onaverage,participantsoverestimatedtheirsenseofhumorbyabout16percentagepoints.

Thismightbethoughtofasthe"above-averageeffect",thenotionthatmostAmericanswouldratethemselvesasaboveaverage,astatisticalimpossibility.

Theresearchersalsoconductedpilotstudiesofdoctorsandgunenthusiasts.Thedoctorsoverestimatedhowwelltheyhadperformedonatestofmedicaldiagnosesandthegunfanciersthoughttheyknewmorethantheyactuallydidaboutgunsafety.
