ThefirstChinesetoreachthemainlandUnitedStatescameduringtheCaliforniaGoldRushof1849.Likemostoftheotherpeoplethere,theyhadcometosearchforgold.Inthatlargelyunoccupiedland,themenstakedaclaimforthemselvesbyplacingmarkersintheground.However,eitherbecausetheChineseweresodifferentfromtheothersorbecausetheyworkedsopatientlythattheysometimessucceededinturningaseeminglyworthlessminingclaimintoaprofitableone,theybecamethescapegoatsoftheirenviouscompetitors.Theywereharassedinmanyways.Oftentheywerepreventedfromworkingtheirclaims;somelocalitiesevenpassedregulationsforbiddingthemtoownclaims.TheChinesethereforestartedtoseekoutotherwaysofearningaliving.Someofthembegantodothelaundryforthewhiteminers;otherssetupsmallrestaurants.(TherewerealmostnowomeninCaliforniainthosedays,andtheChinesefilledarealneedbydoingthis"woman'swork".)Somewenttoworkasfarmhandsorasfishermen.
