is.Basically,whotakestheGRE?Cuzwewannamakesurethatifyou'resittinghereright

nowwatchingthis,thatyou'reactuallygonnataketheGRE.

Sofirstoffhowdoweanswerthis?Well,ifyou'regoingtogradschoolandor;andoryou're

aPhDcandidatethenyouneedtotaketheGRE.However;here'stheimportantpart,ifyou

are.Lookingtogotomedicalschool,lawschool?Eitherofthose,youwanttotaketheMCAT

andtheLSA7;respectively.

YoudonotwanttotaketheGRE.However;ifyouaregoingtobusinessschool,theGREis

nowacceptedbymany,manyprograms.Myguessisyou'vealreadyfiguredthisout.But

justtobesurethatyouare.Takingtherighttest,let'sgetthatoutoftheway.

Now,whatisontheGRE,nowthatweknowwhohastotakeit?Well,theGREismadeup

ofmath,verbal,andwriting.Andbeforeyouclickedonthisvideo,youmayhaveactually

lookedatallofthelessons,andyoumayhaveseenthatwehavebrokenthemupinto

math.Verbal,andwriting,andjustasecondagoIsaidohIamtheverbalguyandBrentis

themathguy,butIshouldalsomentionthatIamthewritingguy,soallofthesethree

componentsoftheGREofcoursearecoveredinourlessonvideos,andyoumayverywell

knowthesethreecomponents,nownextbigquestion,thebiggestquestion.

WhatdoestheGREtest?Nowonethingittestsisyourabilitytoreasonthroughproblems

usinglogic,usingcriticalthinkingskills.Italsotestsyouraccumulatedknowledge.Andby

that,Imean,vocabulary,forinstance.Anythingthatyou'vetakenyearstolearn,youdidn't

justlearnityesterday,lastweek,lastmonth,butyou'veknownforaverylongtime.

Thiscanalsoapplytomath,triangleproperties,etcetera,oreventoessaywriting.Gavin,I

guessyoudidn'tlearntowriteanessay.Afewmonthsago.Butnow,here'sthebiggerthing,

muchbiggerthing.AndthatistheGREtestyourabilitytotaketheGRE.

AndsoeverythingItalkedonthelastslideyouwereprobablynoddingyourheadsaying

yeah,Iknowthis,thisisintro,thisisbasicstuff.Butbam.Thismaybenewstoyou.The

GREisnotanIQtest.Itisnotthistestofthisunvaryingintelligencethatyouhave.

Thatnomatterwhatyouand,youwillgetacertainnumberthatwillneverchange.Alotof

peoplethinkthat.ButtheGRE.TestyourabilitytosimplytaketheGRE.Itisnotaninherent

measureofintelligence.Thafsveryimportanttounderstand.

Becauseyoumaygetfrustratedatthebeginning.Youmaythink,thinkohwow,hereIam,

IalwaysknewIwouldsuckatvocabandnowI'msuckingatvocab.zWellthat'sjustme,

youmustnotthinkthatway.Again.TheGREisatest,andlikeanytest,likeanygame,it

hasit'sownrules,it'sownwayofdoingsomethingandyoucan,onceyouunderstandthose

rules,becomebetterattakingtheGRE.

Sothetestislearnable,that'swhatwe'regonnado.Orthat'swhatyou'regonnadohere

withtheMcgoochproductasyougothroughthevideos.Now,startbyaskingwell,howto

learnGRE.WhatdoIspecificallydo?Well,thingabouttheGREistherearemany

techniques,therearemanystrategies,someofwhicharebetterthanothers.

them.Butyouwannamakesurethatyou'reusingthebeststrategies,thebesttacticstodo

So,it'sperhapsyou'relearninganewgameandallofasudden.Therulessuddenlychange

alittlebit.Andyourbrainchanges,itlearnstoadapttothisprepmaterialcuzthisprep

materialdoesn'taccuratelyreflecttheGRE.Andsothereforeyouwannamakesureyouhave

accurateprepmaterialtogetyoureadyfortestday.

Nowoncethosetwothingsareaccomplisheditreallycomesdowntoyou.You'regoingto

needpractice,ofcourse,aswithanything,likeanygame,anynewthingthatyou'relearning.

Andofcourseyou'regoingtoneedfocusbecauseit'sgoingtobeveryeasytolosethatfocus

overtime.YoumaybecomeaveryspottyGREstudieranddespiteallthesethingsthatthis

isaverylearnabletestandyoucanlearnthebestapproach,ifyousimplydon'tpracticeand

focus.

Timethenyou'renotnecessarilygonnarealizethescoresthatyou*recapableofachieving.So

thisisaninstructionvideoasIsaid.Andthenextseriesofvideosarealsointroductory

videos.Now,youdonothavetogothrougheachonesequentially,meaningifyoudon't

watchsomething,you'redefinitelynotgonnabeabletowatchthenextvideo,nonotatall.

Infact,Iencourageyoueventogotothetextcompletionvideosorthemathvideos,goto

the,videosonintegers.But,ifyouwanttozkindasitbackandlearnalittlebitaboutthe

GRE,andthisisespeciallyforthosewho.ArefreshtotheGRE,thendefinitelywatchthese

GREintrovideos.AndasIsaid,I'llbenarratingtherestofthose.

Andlookforwardtoseeingyouthere.

WhatsontheGRE

Inthisvideo,wearegoingtotalkabouttheGREformat,whattoexpectintermsofthe

sectionsthatareonthetestandthelengthofthosesections.

Sofirstup,there'ssomethingcalledtheAWAsection.Thatstandsforanalyticalwriting

assessment.Youdon'treallyhavetoknowthat.Whatyoushouldknowiswhenyousee

AWA,think,"Ahztheessaysection,"Nextyou'regonnahaveaquantitativesection.

Andthatconsistsoftwosections.JustastheAWAconsistsoftwoessays,thequantitative

sectionconsistsoftwosections.Nextwehavetheverbal,whichalsoconsistsoftwo

sections.

There'salotoftwo,two,andtwogoingonhere.Notethatconsistency,butthenwehave

thiscrazysectioncalledtheexperimentalsection.Theexperimentalsectionisjustgoingto

beonesection.

justonesection.Nowwhatistheexperimentalsection?Ithinkthat'sthequestionthatalot

ofpeoplehave.itsastrangesectionbecauseit'snotactuallygraded.Secondly,thereisno

wayforyoutodeterminewhetherasectionyou'regettingisanexperimentalsection.

Next,youdon'tknowifthatexperimentalsectionisgonnabequantitativeorverbalSoif

yougetatestandthattesthasthreequantitativesections,thatis,attheendofthetest

youfinishupandtherearethree,nottwo,thenyoucanatleastinferthatoneofthose

sectionswastheexperimentalsection.

Again,there'sreallynowayoftellingsoalwaysdoyourbestandalwaysexpectthis

experimentalsection.Now,you'reprobablywondering,howHowmuchtimedoesallofthis

take?

Well,let'sstartwiththeessays.Wehaveheretheissueessaywhichtakesthirty

minutes.Nowyoumaybetemptedtoask,"Oh,tellmemore.Whatdoyoumeanbythe

issueessay?"Fornoworatleastinthisvideo,we'redealingmorewithhighlevel,bigpicture,

whatarethenamesofthesectionsandhowlongdotheygiveyou?

Butifyou'rereallytempted,youcannavigateonthelessonspagedowntowhereitthe

essaysection,theAWAsection,andyoucanclickonthevideoentitled"issue"andyoucan

learnmoreabouttheissueandyoucanalsolearnmoreabouttheargument.

ButfornowInthisvideowewannarememberthattherearetwoessays,issueandargument,

andyouget30minutesforbothessays.Sobasicallyyou'llbewritingforonehour.Next,

thereis,aswementioned,quantitativeormathsection.

Sothoseareusedinterchangeably.Quantitativemeansmath,mathmeansquantitative.And

inthiscase,wehavetwentyquestionsandyouhave35minutesfortheentiresection.You'll

notethatthatworksouttonotquitetwominutesbutactuallyaminuteand45secondsper

question.

Sothat'ssomethingtokeepinmindwhenwegointothepacingwhichcomeslater.Asfor

theverbalsection,samenumberofquestionsbutactuallyfivefewerminutes,whichworks

outtoaminuteandahalfperquestion.

Again,goodthingtokeepinmindwhenitcomestopacing.Whatdoesthisallmean,though?

Well,intermsoftotalhours,fourhours.Nowyouwonder,well,howdoesthatactuallywork?

Fourplusisanawfullylongtime.

IfI'mspendinganhourhereontopontheessays,thenthat'sthreeplushourssections.

Butremember;you'regonnahavemultiplemathsectionsandmultipleverbalsections.And

youthrowintheexperimentalsection,nextthingyouknowyouareclockinginatoverfour

hours.

Andofcourse,there'salwayscheckingin,sittingdown,answeringafewquestions,

determiningwhetherornotyouwannakeepyourscoreattheend.Allofthatfeedsintofour

plusourmark.

NowwhileI'matthisscreen,Ithinksomethingthatisimportantistheflowofthesections.

Somepeoplemightthink,"Well,ifyougetamathsection,it'sfollowedbyanothermath

section,followedbyaverbalsection,andit'ssomethingveryorderly.

Butremember;there'sanexperimentalsectioninhere,sotheyreallywannarandomize

thingsasmuchaspossible.Whatthatmeansisthatthemathsectionmaybetheveryfirst

sectionyousee,ormaybeyou'llseeaverbalsection.

Maybeyou'llgetback-to-backverbalsectionsormaybetherewillbeamathsectionin

between.Ormaybetheveryfirstsectionyouseeisanexperimentalverbalsection.Or

maybebeanexperimentalmathsection.So,again,alotofrandomness.

Trynottogetthrownofftestday.Justexpectanythingonceyou'redonewiththesetwo

essays,which,bytheway,arealwaysinthisorder.Youstartoffwiththeissue,followedby

theargument.

Butafterthat,it'sgonnabemath,verbal,anditcouldbeanexperimentalsection.Youdon't

know.Justkeepyourselfprepared,andagain,whenyoufinishthatfirstsection,thenext

sectionyouget,well,itcouldbeamathsection,orthatis,itcouldbethesamesectionas

yougotonthefirstsection.

Youdon'treallyknow.Soagain,beagileaspossible.

MathSectionBreakdown

Inthissection,we'regonnadojustwhatitsaysattheverytop,whichisbreakdownofthe

mathsection.Thisisimportanttogiveyouanideaofthedifferenttypesofquestionsyou'll

seeinthemathorthequantitativesectionandthenumberofthosequestions.

Sowhatwe'regoingtodoiswe'regoingtostartwithproblemsolving.Problemsolvingis

yourtypicalmathmathquestionswhereyouhaveaquestionandyouhaveaseriesof

answerchoices.TraditionallyyouhadfiveontheGRE,AthroughE,butwiththenewGRE,

whichisthisGRE,problemsolving'sgonealittlebitmorefancy,aswe'regonnaseeinthe

nextslide.

Fornow,though,knowthatproblemsolvingisgonnamakeupthebulkofthemathsection

about60%,Sothere'satotalof40questions,20persection,notincludingtheexperimental,

andoutofthose40questions,25willbeproblemsolving.

Nextwehavethequantitativecomparisonsection.AndIthinkthisistheonethatreally

needsmoreexplication,meaningtoexplainthatalittlebitmoreifyou'retotallynewtothe

GRE.AndwhatI'mIdrawingoverhere?

ColumnsAandcolumnsB.YouwillhaveaquantityincolumnAandaquantityincolumnB.

Thisisaverystripped-downversionofquantitativecomparison,butessentiallythat'swhat

itwilllooklike.

Youaretocomparethecolumnsandseewhichoneisbigger.Andthereobviouslyisanawful

explanationofquantitativecomparison.Thepointofthisslide,ofcourse,isforusjustto

lookatthebreakdownofthemathsection,notnecessarilytounderstandeachspecific

sectionBut,ifyoufeeltemptedandyoureallywanttoknowwhatisChristalkingabout,

what'sthisquantitativecomparison?

Thenfeelfreetonavigatetothelessonspagewhereyoucancheckoutourmanylesson

videosandlearnmoreaboutquantitativecomparison.Fornow,though,whatdowehaveto

knowaboutquantitativecomparison?It'stherestofthetest,40themathsection,meaning

outofthe40questions,15ofthemwillbequantitativecomparison.

toknowwhatyou'redoing.FirstoffisthenumericentryandIguessthat'stheonethatwas

themostdauntingforpeople.

That'sessentiallywhereyouyouhaveabox.Andthat'sallyouhavebelowthequestionand

youhavetoinputyournumberintothatbox,nomultiplechoices.Sodefinitelyalittle

bitstressfulbutIt'salsothatinterpitation.

Thisiswhereyouhavethegraphsandpiecharts.Andthisissomethingyouhaveontheold

GRE.Andeventhiscanbealittlestressful.Iguessitdependsreallyonwhatyourstrengths

are.Next,somethingthattheyadded,andIthinkformanypeoplethisoneisreallythe

moststressfulorthemostdifficultorthemostfreaky,ifyouwill.

It'sthemultipleanswerquestions,meaningthatyouwillhaveaquestionfollowedbyas

manyastenpossibleanswers.Sowe'retalkinglike,A,B,C,DzE,allthewaydownhereto

answerchoiceIandanyoneofthesecanbecorrect.

Andofcoursethatisverydaunting.Butjustknowthatthesequestionsmakeuptheproblem

solvingsectionandthatyouwillseethem.Youhopefullywon'tseetoomanyofthem.You'll

onlyseeacouplenumericentry.

You'llseeprobably6datainterpretationquestionsandafewmultipleanswerquestions.One

greatthing,iswhenyougothroughourproduct,andyouactuallydoaquestion,suchasa

numericentryquestion,they'llsayityouwillsee,youknow,thismanynumericentry

questionspersection.

Sothey'llgiveyouabetterideaofjusthowmanyoftheseproblemsolvingquestionsyou'll

see.Butbyfarthemostcommonproblemsolvingquestiontypeisourgoodoldfiveanswer

multiplechoice.Soyoucankindofexhale,breathealittlesighofrelieftherethatwhat

you'reusedtoisactuallythemostcommon,andthatagainisafiveanswermultiplechoice

question.

VerbalSectionBreakdown

Inthisvideo,wewillhaveaverbalbreakdownofthequestiontypes.Sowhatyoucanexpect

aretextcompletion.Thesearebasicallythesentencesorparagraphsthathaveblanks,and

youhavetofillinthecorrectwordintothoseblanks.

Nowyouwillhavesevenoftheseinarow.Therewillbesevenpersection.Soit'simportant

toknowthattheycomeoneafteranother.Thenextquestiontypewillbesentence

equivalence.Therewillbefourofthesepersection.Theseareactuallyverysimilartotext

completionsinthatthereisasentencewithablank,butherethere*salwaysoneblankand

onesentenceButtwopossibleanswerchoicesorwordsthatfitintothatblank.

Again,youwillhavefouroftheseinarow.Theydon'tactuallycomerightafterthetext

completionsthough.Next,it'sagooldoldreadingcomprehension.That'swhateveryone

thinksthatwhentheythinkofverbalstandardizedtestsoratleasttheverbalsectionon

standardizedtests.

Sothereitis,9persection.Soquitealotoftheverbalsectionwillbereadingcomprehension,

Finally,there'stheparagrapharguement.Andthereareabouttwoofthesepersection.Now

you'llnoticethatwaitasecond-Chrisdidn'tdohismath.Eleven,nine,andtwothat's22.

What'sgoingon?Well,thething\s,paragraphargumentsarecontainedinthe

Readingcomprehensionsection.SotheGREactuallyhasn'tgivenaspecificnameforthese

questions.

Theyareparagraphs,andtheyarepresentingalogicalargument,andyoubasicallyhaveto

evaluatethatargument.Soagainquestionsareactuallysubsumedorpartoftheguideor

peoplewhorightthegre.

Don'tevengiveaspecificnametothesequestionstypesbutwedo'causetheyaredifferent

fromyouraveragereadingcomprehensionquestions.Andoftentimestheyareverydifficult,

soit'sgoodtohaveaseparatesectiononourlessonpagewehavelessonsthatarespecific

toparagrapharguments.

NowonelittlethingIwannatalkabouthereisthisbuilt-indifficultyintextcompletions.Now

ingeneral,theverbalsectiondoesnotbecomemoredifficultthehigherupyougo,

meaningthatquestiontwoisnotmoredifficultthanquestiononeorthesecondquestion

readingcomppassageisn'tmoredifficultthanthefirstone,exceptformaybetext

completions,andletmetellyouwhatImeanbythis.

Well,firstofftheseone-blankquestions.Therewillbetwoquestiontypes.Typically,the

secondquestionismoredifficultintheone-blanktextcompletions.Nextyou'regonnaget

twoormaybethreetwo-blanktextcompletions.

Thefirstonewon'tbeasdifficultasthesecondone,andifthere'sathirdone,itwilltendto

bemoredifficult.AndthereasonI'mmentioningallthisisfromastrategicstandpoint.

Whenyougettothisthirdonandit'sverydifficult,that'sbecauseitisverydifficult.And

youdonotgetextrapointsagainforthatquestion.Soit'sagoodideatoskipthesequestions

andcomebacktothemifyouhaveenoughtime.

It'sdefinitelyagoodideanottospendaninordinateoranexcessiveamountoftimetrying

tograpplewiththesedifficultquestions.Finallythereisthethreeblanktextcompletion,

sayingyoucangeteitheratwoorthreeofthese,andthelastone,whetherit'snumbertwo

ornumberthree,tendstobethemostdifficult.

Soagain,don'tstrugglewiththatreallydifficultonebutgoontotheReadingComprehension,

andtrytofindsomeeasiermediumlevelquestionsthere.

ScoringRange

Inthisvideo,wearegoingtotalkaboutscoringontheGRE.Thisisabigquestion.Whatis

thescorerange?WhatisthescoreIwanttoget?Sothisisagreatplacetostart.

Firstofftherangeisverydifferent.From130-170foreachsection.SoMathis130to170.

Asisverbal.Soifsactually260compositeisthelowestyoucanget.And340isthehighest.

With300beinginthemiddle.Sogoodthingtoknow.Compositeis340,butoftentimes

peoplespeakintermsoftheirscorespersection.Finally,there'stheessaywhichisgraded

froma0.0toa6.0.

Soagain,quitearange,youdefinitelydon'twanttogetazero.6.0issomethingthat'svery

difficulttoachieve.Onlythetopoftesttakersareabletodoso.Sodefinitelyquiteasummit

toandforasfarastheoldscalegoes.

AndwhyamIevenmentioningtheoldscalenowthatI'vegonethroughthenewscale?Well,

someofyoumayhavetakentheGREbeforeitchangedinAugust2011.Andyou*re
