Thatlossseemslikelierthaneverbecausetheanimalsareunderthreatasneverbefore.Oncelushlyforested,Madagascarhasseenmorethan80%ofitsoriginalvegetationcutdownorburnedsincehumansarrivedatleast1500yearsago,fragmentinghabitatsandleavinganimalseffectivelyhomeless.Uncheckedhuntingwipedoutanumberoflargespecies,andtodaymining,loggingandenergyexplorationthreatenthosethatremain.IthasanareathesizeofNewJerseyinMadagascarthatisstillunderforest,andallthisincrediblediversityiscrammedintoit.

Madagascarisaconservationhotspotatermforaregionthatisverybiodiverseandparticularlythreatened--andwhilethatmakestheislandspecial,itishardlyalone.Conservationistsestimatethatextinctionsworldwideareoccurringatapacethatisupto1000timesasgreatashistory'sbackgroundratebeforehumanbeingsbeganscattering.Worse,thatdie-offcouldbeaccelerating.

That'sabouttochange.Afterthe2000census,theU.S.Governmentshouldhaveabetteridea.In1997,theOfficeofManagementandBudget,whichoverseesfederalstatisticalpractices,approvedadirectiveallowingpeopletocheckasmanyracialboxesastheybelieveapplytothem.Theshiftwasacompromisebetweenthedemandsofsomeinterestgroupsthatwantedtheadditionofa"multiracial"box,andthosethatobjectedtoanychange,fearingdilutionoftheirnumbers.

Meanwhile,intheabsenceofOfficialnumbers,withtheheightenedtensionsurroundingracialissues,andwiththemutualsuspicionthatexistsamongcompetingracialandethnicinterestgroups,there'slittleagreementonwhatintermarriagewillmeanforU.S.societyinthefuture.
