ThemongoosegrewupwithalotofloveandcareintheBrahmin’shouse.HesleptnexttotheBrahmin’ssoninthecradle1,drankmilkandplayedwiththeboyeveryday.Thebabymongoose’sdayswerefullofjoyintheBrahmin’shouse.Asboththeboyandthemongoosegrewup,theirfriendshipchangedtoarelationshipbetweentwobrothers.

Themongoosegrewupfastandasdayswentby,theBrahmin’swifebegantogetdoubtsinhermind.“Afterall,thisisawildanimal.Soonerorlateritwillshowitstruecolours,shethoughttoherself.Sheputthemongoose’sbedseparatelyandwouldwatchhimcarefullywheneverheplayedwithherson.

OnedaywhentheBrahminwasaway.Gowridecided2togototherivertofetchapotofwater.Shelookedaroundandsawhersonsoundasleepinhiscradle.Themongoosewasalsoasleepontheflooratthefootofthecradle.ThisshouldtakeonlyafewmomentsIhopeIcantrustthatmongoosenottoharmmylittleson,shesaidtoherselfandafterafinallookatthembothshehurrieddowntotheriver.

Suddenly,themongoosewokeupwithastart.Hehadheardaveryfaintnoise.Lookingup,themongoosesawalargeblacksnakecrawlinginthroughaholeinthewall.

“Thesnakewillharmmybrother.Motherandfatherareaway.Iwillhavetoprotectmylittlebrother,thoughtthemongoose,asthesnakecameslitheringtowardsthecradle.

Thebravelittlemongoosepounced3onthehugeblacksnake.Afteralong,ferocious4fight,thelittlemongoosefinallymanagedtokillthesnake.

Justthen,heheardtheBrahmin’swifereturning.Joyfully5,heranouttomeethismotherandtriedtellingherthroughhislittleanimalsignsthathehadprotectedhislittlebrotherfromadreadful6snake.

Enteringthehousewithaheavyheart,shewasamazedtoseeherlittlesonlyinginhiscradlestilldeepinsleep.Onthefloorwasahugeblacksnakewithitsuglyheadbittenoff.
