“Gowri,Ifoundthislittlecreatureonmywayhome.Letustakecareofhim,hesaidtohiswife.“Verywellalongwithourson,Iwilltakecareofthemongoosealso,repliedhiswife.
ThemongoosegrewupwithalotofloveandcareintheBrahmin’shouse.HesleptnexttotheBrahmin’ssoninthecradle1,drankmilkandplayedwiththeboyeveryday.Thebabymongoose’sdayswerefullofjoyintheBrahmin’shouse.Asboththeboyandthemongoosegrewup,theirfriendshipchangedtoarelationshipbetweentwobrothers.
Themongoosegrewupfastandasdayswentby,theBrahmin’swifebegantogetdoubtsinhermind.“Afterall,thisisawildanimal.Soonerorlateritwillshowitstruecolours,shethoughttoherself.Sheputthemongoose’sbedseparatelyandwouldwatchhimcarefullywheneverheplayedwithherson.
OnedaywhentheBrahminwasaway.Gowridecided2togototherivertofetchapotofwater.Shelookedaroundandsawhersonsoundasleepinhiscradle.Themongoosewasalsoasleepontheflooratthefootofthecradle.ThisshouldtakeonlyafewmomentsIhopeIcantrustthatmongoosenottoharmmylittleson,shesaidtoherselfandafterafinallookatthembothshehurrieddowntotheriver.
Suddenly,themongoosewokeupwithastart.Hehadheardaveryfaintnoise.Lookingup,themongoosesawalargeblacksnakecrawlinginthroughaholeinthewall.
“Thesnakewillharmmybrother.Motherandfatherareaway.Iwillhavetoprotectmylittlebrother,thoughtthemongoose,asthesnakecameslitheringtowardsthecradle.
Thebravelittlemongoosepounced3onthehugeblacksnake.Afteralong,ferocious4fight,thelittlemongoosefinallymanagedtokillthesnake.
Justthen,heheardtheBrahmin’swifereturning.Joyfully5,heranouttomeethismotherandtriedtellingherthroughhislittleanimalsignsthathehadprotectedhislittlebrotherfromadreadful6snake.
ButassoonasGowrisawbloodonthemongoose’smouthandpaws,shethought,“Thiswretched7animalhaskilledmylittleson.InafitofangertheBrahmin’swifethrewthepotfullofwateronthemongoosekilling8himinstantly.
Enteringthehousewithaheavyheart,shewasamazedtoseeherlittlesonlyinginhiscradlestilldeepinsleep.Onthefloorwasahugeblacksnakewithitsuglyheadbittenoff.
“OhwhathaveIdone,criedtheBrahmin’swife.“Ikilledthatfaithfullittlemongoosewhosavedthelifeofmypreciousson.

Thejackalwasalarmed.Remember,weareinanorchard4.Ifthefarmerhearsus,wewillbeintrouble.Ifyouwanttosingletusgoawayfromhere,headvisedthedonkey.

Somedayshesoldfruitsandonotherdays,kettles.Tocarryallhiswares2,thepeddlerhadadonkey.Everymorning,thepeddlerloadedthedonkeywithhiswares.Thetwowouldsetoutandwalkfromfarmhouse3tofarmhouse,fromvillagetovillageandfrommarkettomarket.
Thepeddleralwayswalkedahead,whistlingmerrilyashewent.Thepoordonkeyfollowed,tryingashardashecouldtokeepupwithhismasterandgroaning4undertheweightofhisload.

Andthepeddlerdancedalittlejig8inthemiddleoftheroad.Thedonkeycouldonlythinkoftheheavyloadonhisbackandthelongdayahead.
Thedonkeyplodded9alongbehindthepeddler.Thesunwasnowhighinthesky.Thedonkeywashotandtiredandlonging10foradrinkofwater.Upahead,heknew,thereflowedastreamofcool,sweetwater.Thedonkeyhurriedtowardsthestreamasfastashistiredlegsandtheheavyloadonhisbackwouldallowandleanedoverforadrink.Theedgeofthestreamwasslipperywithmudandslush.Thedonkey,withtheheavysacksofsaltonhisback,slippedandfellintothewater.

Butsuddenly,thedonkeyfelthimselffloating,theloadonhisbackgoneasifbymagic.Heclamberedoutontothebankandshookhimself.Yes!Theweightonhisbackhadvanished!
Ofcoursethesackswerelighter13,forthesalthaddissolvedinthewater.Butthedonkeydidnotknowthat.Atlast!Awaytoridmyselfofmyburdens,hethoughtandbrayedwithjoyathisgreatdiscovery.

Nextmorningthepeddlerloadedthemonkeyagain,thistimewithbalesofcloththathewantedtosellatthenextvillage.Becarefultoday,olddonkey,’hesaidastheysetoff.‘Ididnotearnpennyyesterday.Imustearndoubletodayorwegotobedhungrytonight.
