Thecarsarepoweredbythesun,buttheraceitselfispoweredbytheorganizationanddedicationofcollegestudents.ItstartedwiththeStanfordSolarCarProject,aloosecollectionof40orsostudentswhohavesofarbuilttwosolarcarswithalittlefacultyadviceandalotofhardwork.GraduatestudentDaveCaditzspearheadedtheideaofaracethatwouldzig-zagacrossCaliforniaandinspirethepublic'sinterestinalternative-poweredvehicles.
The8thWorldSolarChallengewilldepartDarwinonSunday25September2005.ScrutineeringcommencesonThursday22September,andmostteamsspendatleastaweekinDarwinpreparingfordeparture.
TheWorldSolarChallengeisacelebrationofachievement,ofcourageandtheapplicationofscientificknowledgeinthefieldofsolartechnology.Thisistheadventureofyoungpeoplenotonlydreamingofasafer,smarter,greenerworld,butofskilledyoungenthusiastsworkingtomakeitareality.
TheAmericanSolarChallenge
TheAmericanSolarChallenge(ASC)isacompetitiontodesign,buildandraycesolar-poweredcarsinacross-countryevent.
In2005therewillbeaspecialeditionofASC,the2005NorthAmericanSolarChallenge.TeamswillcompeteinasolarvehicleraycefromUnitedStatesthroughCanada!
In1997,UniSA,SeatonHighSchool,Fremont-ElizabethCityHighandAnnesleyCollegeformedtheSouthAustralianSolarCarConsortium.TheaimoftheConsortiumwastohelpstudentsdesign,buildandracesolarcarsintheWorldSolarChallenge.AsolarcarracesdownthestreetintheWorldSolarChallenge.HeldeverytwoyearsinAustralia,theracebeganin1987andwastheworld'sfirstsolarcarraceTheHistoryofSolarCarRacing
HansTholstrupandLarryPerkinspioneeredsolarcarracingwhentheycompletedanepicSolarTrekfromPerthtoSydney(Australia)in1983.Whatfollowedwasaseriesofsolarcarracesdesignedtoincreasepublicawareness.
The1987AustralianWorldSolarChallengesaw23participantsinauguratethefirstsuchrace,followedbytheEuropeanTourdeSol,theAmericanTourdeSol,andtheSUNRAYCE.Somespectacularcorporateandcollegevehiclesadornedtheseearlyracesandarepicturedbelow.HowtoDesignaSolarCarIfyouareinterestedinsolarcarracing,pleasereadthefollowingtolearnhowtodesignasolarcar.DesigningandBuildingaSolarCarReadandlearnhowtomakeasolarcar.Designingandbuildingasolarcarisanenormousprojectthatcantakeuptotwoyearstocomplete.EnergyFlowforaSolarCarEnergyflowdiagramforasolarcarThesunlighthitsthecellsofthesolararray,whichproducesanelectricalcurrent.Theenergy(current)cantraveltothebatteriesforstorage,godirectlytothemotorcontroller,oracombinationofboth.Theenergysenttothecontrollerisusedtopowerthemotorthatturnsthewheelandmakesthecarmove.DriverControlsSolarcarsdohavesomeofthestandardfeaturesfoundinconventionalcars,suchasturnsignals(front&rear),brakelights,accelerator(gaspedal),rea
