Objectives:NotesofThanksNotesofInvitationandReplyNotesofInquiryandRequest2

NotesNotesareverycommonmeansofpassingyourmessagestootherpeoplewhenyoucannottalktotheminperson.Usually,notesareshortannottobemailed;theyareleftathome,attheofficeorwithaneighbororfriendforpeopletoread.3

Formatofnotes:

Whenwewriteanotetoafriend,wedonothavetowriteouraddress.Writethedateontheupperright-handcornerofthepaper.Towritethenote,webeginsimplywiththeperson’sfirstname(sometimeswith“dear”beforeit).Closewithourownfirstnave,nothavingtowrite“sincerely”asweusuallydoinaletter.Ifthenoteiswrittentoaprofessororacolleaguewhomyouarenotveryfamiliarwith,youwritetheperson’sfamilynamewithatitlesuchas“Mr.”or“Professor”beforeit,andsignwithyourfullname.4

Languageofnotes:Innotestofriendsorfamilies,wetendtowriteinaninformaltone,soinformalexpressionsandincompletesentencesarecommon.Butsometimesweneedtowritenotestopeoplewhoarenotourclosefriends;inthatcase,wewritecompletesentencesandusemoreformalexpressionstoshowourpolitenessforthatperson.5
