Despitefrequentcallsforcuttingpollutionoverrecentyears,andgrowingpublicanger,theproblemhasonlygotworse.Schoolsandworkplacestypicallyoperateasnormalinallbutthemostseveresmog,evenwhenitreacheshazardouslevels.

Primaryandmiddleschoolssuspendedclasseslastmonthinthenorth-eastcityofHarbinduringasmogemergency.Theairportandsomebusrouteswerealsoclosed.

Chinamustalsotoughenanti-pollutionmeasuresonindustryandreduceitsdependenceoncoal,whichproducesmorethanthree-quartersofthecountry’selectricity,theenvironmentministrysaid.

Publicsecuritydepartmentsshouldalsotoughenchecksonvehicles,includingphasingoutolderones,andensuretherearenottoomanyontheroads,itsaid.

Shanghai’shourlydensityofPM2.5,airparticlessmallerthan2.5microns,alsoreached250microgramspercubicmeterby10am,whilethereadingwasonly60microgramspercubicmeterearlyTuesdaymorning.

TheheavypollutionintheeasternmetropolisfollowedthickairpollutioninBeijingovertheweekend.Beijing’sdensityofPM2.5broketherecordsincethemunicipalitybeganpublishingthedatainearly20XXasitsfigurewenthigherthan900microgramspercubicmeterinseveraldistrictsofthecityonSaturday.

LinChenyan,aforecasterwithShanghaiEnvironmentalMonitoringCenter,saidthecoldfrontbroughtinairbornepollutantsfromthenorth.

“ThecoldsnapislikeabroomsweepingdownallthewaytoShanghai,anditbringsthedusthere,”saidLin,addingthatatmosphericmotionsometimescausestroublesuchasthat.

BeforearrivinginShanghai,thepollutantshadleftsomeofShanghai’sneighboringprovincesshroudedinsmogandfog.

Fiftyoutofthe72monitoringstationsinJiangsuprovincereportedmediumtoheavypollutiononMondayevening,accordingtoZhangXiangzhi,deputydirectoroftheJiangsuEnvironmentalMonitoringCenter.

YangXin,aprofessorwithFudanUniversity’sdepartmentofenvironmentalscienceandengineeringwhospecializesinatmosphericparticulates,saidseasonalinfluencesexplaintherecord-breakingdatainbothBeijingandShanghai.

“TakeShanghaiasanexample.Itjustcelebrateditscleanestsummerin20XX-seabreezefromthesoutheastishelpfulindilutingpollutantsintheair.However,themonsoonscomingfromthenorthwestinthewinterusuallybringdirtyairfromthenorth,”Yangsaid.

AgriculturalstrawburninginnearbyareasalsocontributedtopartofShanghai’sPM2.5reading,accordingtoWangLin,aresearcheratFudanUniversity’sDepartmentofEnvironmentalScienceandEngineering.

“Butit’shardfortheShanghaigovernmenttoprohibitfarmersintheneighboringregionsfromdoingso,”Wangsaid.

AccordingtoLin,theforecaster,Shanghai’sairwassettoimproveonWednesdaynightandearlyThursdaymorning.Thenextwaveofcoldairismuchcleanerbecauseoftheclearingofairpollutioninthenorth.
