MarkRothko,oneofthegreatestpaintersofthetwentiethcentury,wasborninDaugavpils,Latviain1903.HisfatherimmigratedtotheUnitedStates,fearingthathissonwouldbedrafted(招募)intotheCzaristarmy.MarkstayedinRussiawith

MarkmovedtoNewYorkintheautumnof1923andfoundemploymentinthegarmenttradeandtookupresidenceontheUpperWestSide.ItwaswhilehewasvisitingsomeoneattheArtStudentsLeaguethathesawstudentssketchinganudemodel.Accordingtohim,thiswasthestartofhislifeasanartist.Hewastwentyyearsoldandhadtakensomeartlessonsatschool,so
hisinitialexperiencewasfarfromanimmediatecalling.
In1936,MarkRothkobeganwritingabook,whichhenevercompletedaboutthesimilaritiesinthechildren'sartandthe
workofmodernpainters.Theworkofmodernists,whichwasinfluencedbyprimitive(原始的)art,accordingtohim,couldbe
comparedtothatofchildreninthat"Childarttransformsitselfintoprimitivism(原始主義),whichisonlythechildproducing
