thanatrue-to-lifemap,itdidn'ttelltravelersabouthowfaritactuallywasbetweentwopoints.Beck'smap

hadacleanstructurewithcolouredlines.Hisideawastocreatetheplainestguidetoshowtravelershowto

getfromonestationtoanother.

It'snotclearwhatinspiredhimtostarttheproject;hewasn'taskedtodoit,butlikelydevelopedhisdesign

inhisfreetime,whilebetweenjobs.ltwasmoreapresentationofhisbeingcreative,inseeingaproblem

andcomingupwithananswertoit,thanaresponsetopublicdemand.

HisdesignwasthenpresentedtotheLondonPassengerTransportBoard,whosemembersrefusedto

acceptit,feelingthatnotshowingrelativedistancesbetweenstationswassillyandunreasonable.Still,

afteratime,inordertoincreasesubwayridershipandthereforeearnmoremoney,theBoarddecidedto

printalimitednumberofcopies.Gradually,Beck'smapbecameahugesuccess.
