number

internationaltourist

arrivals

more

than

doubled,

which

resultedin

a

share

tourism

in

each

country’s

tradeand

economy.

Creating

of

jobs

globally,

tourismprovides

opportunities

to

reduce

economic

and

socialdisparities,

conserve

natural

and

cultural

resources,

andfoster

civic

prideand

social

cohesion.This

Toolkitpresents

aset

of

indicators

that

can

be

appliedto

tourism

projects

in

international

development

settingsand

the

tourism

business,

destination

management,community

development,

academic

research,

publicadministration,

etc.

The

Covid-19

pandemic

hashighlighted

the

importance

of

sustainable

tourism;

and

itsrelevance

to

addressing

the

needs

of

visitors,

the

tourismindustry,

the

environment

and

host

communities

is

morethan

ever.JICA

recognizes

tourism

as

a

strong

driver

for

sustainabledevelopment.

Since

the

1970s,

JICA

has

supportedtourism

development

across

countries,

collaborating

withgovernment

counterparts,

the

private

sector,

academics,civil

societies

and

international

development

partners.UNWTO

has

been

an

essential

partner

for

JICA,

and

thecooperation

between

the

two

organizations

was

furtherenhanced

in

2017

with

the

signature

of

a

Memorandumof

Cooperation.

In

2018,

in

collaboration

with

UNWTO,JICA

carried

out

the

study

Achieving

the

SDGs

throughSustainable

Tourism

Development:

The

Impact

ofdonor-supported

Tourism

Projects,

which

analysed
