experienceofpainbyhumanbeingsaretobefoundinall

mammalianvertebratesatleast;thisishardlysurprisingas

painisaresponsetoapotentiallyharmfulstimulusandis

thereforeofgreatbiologicalimportanceforsurvival.Isthere

anyreason,then,forsupposingthatanimals,thoughequipped

withallthenecessaryneurologicalstructures,donot

experiencepain?Suchaviewwouldseemtopresupposeaprofound

qualitativedifferenceinthementallifeofanimalsandmen.

Thedifferencebetweenthehumanandsubhumannervoussystem

lieschieflyinthemuchgreaterdevelopmentofthehuman

forebrain.Thiswouldbesignificantinthepresentcontext

onlyiftherewerereasontobelievethatitalonewas

correlatedwiththeoccurrenceofconsciousexperiences.But

muchofourknowledgeofthenervousregulationof

consciousnessisderivedfromexperimentsonanimals.
