wasthevehicle'sbrain.Thiswasdesignedandbuiltbythe
StanfordArtificialIntelligenceLaboratory(SAIL).
Stanley'sbrainconsistsofsixtop-of-the-rangePentiumchips
wiredcollaborativelytogether.Itisprogrammedwithspecial
softwarethatisabletolearnfromitsmistakes.Thissoftware
masteredthetricksofcol1ision-avoidanceinaseriesof
deserttestrunsconductedbeforetheracestarted.

Sosmart,autonomousvehiclescan,indeed,findtheirway
acrossseveralhundredkilometresofdesert.Thequestionis,
whatnext?DARPA'sanswer,ofcourse,willbetogodownthe
militaryroute.Butthissortoftechnologyhasobvious
civilianapplicationsaswell,asSebastianThrun,theheadof
bothSAILandtheStanfordracingteam,iskeentoemphasize.

producingtwiceasmanysonsasdaughters.Sinceanotherofthe
kakapo,speculiaritiesisitsbreedingsysteminwhichthemale
playsnopartinraisingtheyoung,thesurvivalprospectsof
