In1996,theagricultureministrytaskedYuantostartaprogramtobreed4tsuperrice”,plantsofmuchhigher

yields.

Varioushybridricehasyieldsthattendtobeabout20percenthigherthanthoseoftraditionalrice,andhave

beenplantedin16millionhectares,ormorethanhalfofChina'sriceacreage.Chinacouldfeed70millionmore

peoplethankstoYuan*sresearch.

YuanwasawardedtheWorldFoodPrizein2004,fbr64pioneeringresearchthathelpedtransformChinafrom
