Chapter4Syntax

ThewordSyntax,derivedfromGreek,ismadeupof2morphemes:{syn}and{tax}.Theformermeans“_________〞,andthelatter“___________〞.Inlinguistics,

Syntax(句法學(xué))isabranchthatstudieshowwordsarecombinedtoformsentencesandtherulesthatgoverntheformationofsentences.

Toputitsimple,itisthestudyoftheformationofsentences.togethertoarrange4.1Whatissyntax?SinceSentenceisregardedasthelargestgrammaticalunitofalanguage,syntaxhaslongbeenthecentreofgrammaticalstudy.Differentlinguisticstheoriesfirstdifferintheirtreatmentofsentencestructure.
