You'reontheTitanicII.Ithasjusthitanicebergandissinking.And,aslasttime,therearenotenoughlifeboats.Thecaptainshouts,“Womenandchildrenfirst!”Butthistime,anothervoiceisheard:“Whywomen?”LanguagePoints2 Why,indeed?PartofthecharmofthesuccessfulmovieTitanicaretheperiodcostumes,theperiodextravagance,andtheperiodprejudices.Anaudiencecanenjoytheseatadistance.Oddly,however,ofalltheperiodattitudesinthefilm,theoldmaritimetraditionof“womenandchildrenfirst”enjoystotalacceptancebymodernaudiences.Listentotheaudiencebooatthebadguyswhotrytosneakonthelifeboatswith—oraheadof—theladies.LanguagePoints3 Butisnotgroupingwomenwithchildrenaraginganachronism?Shouldnotanyself-respectingmodernperson,letalonefeminist,objecttoitasinsultingtowomen?4 Yetitsusageisascommontodayasitwasin1912.Considertheseexamplestakenalmostatrandomfromrecentnewspapers:5
