agoonMonday,itwasannouncedthattheGamesofthe30thOlympiadwouldbein
London.PlanningdocumentspledgedthatthegreatlegacyoftheGameswouldbe
toleveranationofsportloversawayfromtheircouches.Thepopulationwouldbe

aftergoingtoschoolfor12years,itdoesn'tfeelnaturaltospendayeardoing
somethingthatisn'tacademic.
Butwhilethismaybetrue,ifsnotagoodenoughreasontocondemngapyears.
There'salwaysaconstantfearoffallingbehindeveryoneelseonthesocially
perpetuated“racetothefinishline,^^whetherthatbetowardgraduateschool,
medicalschooloralucrativecareer.Butdespitecommonmisconceptions,agapyear

StudiesfromtheUnitedStatesandAustraliashowthatstudentswhotakeagap
yeararegenerallybetterpreparedforandperformbetterincollegethanthose
whodonot.Ratherthanpullingstudentsback,agapyearpushesthemaheadby
preparingthemforindependence,newresponsibilitiesandenvironmentalchanges
